|

Hello everyone, I am new to the forums and looking forward to being a part of this community! I recently purchased my first kayak and have been anxious to get out on the water but this wind we have been experiencing lately has not cooperated. I've only been able to take the kayak out a handful of times. I was curious if any of y'all would like to share any launch locations that would be protected from a 15-20 mph SE wind that would be safe. _________________ Check out my YouTube channel just getting started and give me some tips on improving my videos!

Welcome aboard. Tyler has a nice site.
I generally wade from a boat and am not a kayak fisherman. But you could launch along the Highway between Aransas Pass and Port A ferries to fish Lighthouse Lakes or upper end of South Bay in a strong south wind. I see a lot of kayakers in that area when south wind is blowing. Also texasfishingtips.com site has a good video on kayak launch sites on the south shore of Copano Bay in high SE winds this week. |

Although I have never fished Nueces Bay, I would think it would somewhat protected from the wind. When I'm trying to plan a day, I pull out my maps, consult the wind forecasts and try to figure out where my best chances of escaping the negative effects of the wind. However, that being said, sometimes the wind can be your best friend out there, so you just need to learn how to use it to your advantage, in other words, plan your paddle trip where the wind is at your back coming home! |

Good info above for sure... wind is not always something to avoid. Try to plan your launch and route, and be willing to get off that yak and park it securely and wade when the wind is up. Use a real anchor.. get a little small danforth with 4 feet of chain and some rope and once you find an area with some fish in some potholes, park that baby and wade it. Any of the grass flats should hold water conditions longer in higher winds, probably moreso than nueces. There are some area in upper nueces that might be protected but a lot of the shell and mud is not protected on a SE. Wilsons cut would be another good option and possibly port bay and swan lake over there.
good luck, have fun. |
