How long does it normally take for the surf to clear up after windy days like today? Was headed to PINS in the AM, but checked the beach cams and the surf looks like chocolate milk. 2 days ago it was perfect! Winds look to start dying down thurs evening. Is it likely to be a busted weekend?

It all depends on mother nature. There's a rumor going around the dirty water is due to a cold water upwelling. It is not a cold water upwelling. Water temperature is at 82 degrees which is typical for this time of year. My guess is it's fresh water from all the rain in south Texas coming up the coast. With consistent south winds the dirty water should continue moving north. Surf cams from south padre show beautiful water conditions so I expect the same conditions to return in a couple of days on PINS starting on the south end. Jeff Wolda

Jeff, a HUGE thanks for your response. I've followed this forum for years and the generosity of the good folks here is so beneficial to those of us that travel a distance to visit. I was prepared to call the trip off, but with that info it's worth a shot to me.
And FYI, my heart skipped a few beats when I read the dreaded words 'cold water upwelling!' Lol

This exact question was asked not long ago. You might try a search. In a nutshell, it's NOT always the wind or the size of the waves. Cool

Unless you're searching for pomps or trout or just pretty blue water to enjoy; some of my best days fishing the surf are when its dirty. Especially BTs. They seem to come in closer to feed when it's dirty. I'm no expert-just saying.
