Red Tide Status Update
Reporting Period: October 26 to October 30 @1000 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working with other agencies to monitor a red tide event along the southern Texas coast. The bloom was first confirmed on Sunday, September 13, by the University of Texas Marine Science Institute who collected samples around the fish pass jetties on Mustang Island due to strong aerosols. Water samples collected and analyzed for Karenia brevis densities are given the following designations:  Background = Less than < 1 cell/ml  Very Low = 1 to 10 cells/ml)  Low = 10 to 100 cells/ml  Moderate = 100 to 1,000 cells/ml  High = Greater than 1,000 cells/ml

On 10/29/15, TPWD staff conducted an overflight along the gulf coast from Galveston to Pass Cavallo and Matagorda Bay. No K.brevis bloom or dead fish observed.
Upper Coast (Sabine Lake, Galveston Bay, East Matagorda Bay, Matagorda Bay):

 TPWD Gulf trawl surveys out of Sabine Lake area observed no indication of red tide. Observations included no aerosols, no dead or distressed fish, and no indication of discolored water.
 TPWD Gulf trawl surveys out of Galveston Bay area observed no indication of red tide. Observations included no aerosols, no dead or distressed fish, and no indication of discolored water.
Galveston Bay Area
 No new updates during this reporting period.
East Matagorda/Matagorda Bay area
 Recent rains in the watershed have reduced salinities in the area.
Fish kills
Gulf of Mexico
 On 10/28/15, shrimp tissue collected on 10/9/15 from a commercial fisherman by staff was submitted to TAMU-CC, Center for Coastal Studies for brevitoxin analysis. Please refer to 10/12/15 Red Tide Update.
Galveston Bay Area
 No new updates during this reporting period.
East Matagorda/Matagorda Bay area
 On 10/28/15, fish tissue collected on 10/9/15 by staff was submitted to TAMU-CC, Center for Coastal Studies for brevitoxin analysis.
Mid Coast (San Antonio Bay, Aransas Bay, Corpus Christi Bay, Upper Laguna Madre)
Water samples
Gulf of Mexico
 Over the past 24 hrs., the TAMU Image Flow Cytobot at the UTMSI Pier in Port Aransas has reported K.brevis cell maintaining low to very low concentrations.
 TPWD Gulf trawl surveys out of the Corpus Christi area observed stressed menhaden and slight discoloration to the water approximately 3 miles ENE of the Port Aransas jetties.
 TPWD Gulf trawl surveys out of the Port O'Connor area observed no indication of red tide. Observations included no aerosols, no dead or distressed fish, and no indication of discolored water.
 Water samples collected for K.brevis by PINS ranged between very low to moderate. Samples collected included high amounts of lysed cells due to high wave action.
San Antonio Bay
 Water samples collected for K.brevis by TDSHS in San Antonio Bay area indicated high concentrations in Espiritu Santo Bay, apptox one half mile west of dogleg in Army Channel. Distressed menhaden was also observed.
Aransas Bay
 No new updates during this reporting period.
Corpus Christi Bay
 Streaking continues to be observed along the southern section of Corpus Christi Bay along the Corpus Christi bay front. Discolored water was present along the Nueces Causeway as well.
 While conducting routine monitoring sampling TPWD staff observed discolored water near the Ingleside area.
Upper Laguna Madre
 Water samples collected for K.brevis by PINS indicated very low concentrations at Bird Island Basin.
Fish kills
Gulf of Mexico
 Reports of distressed menhaden were observed in the Aransas Pass area.
 Reports of distressed menhaden were observed near Packery Channel area.
San Antonio Bay
 On 10/28/15, shrimp tissue collected on 10/9/15 from a commercial fisherman by staff was submitted to TAMU-CC, Center for Coastal Studies for brevitoxin analysis.
Aransas Bay
 While conducting routine monitoring sampling TPWD staff observed no aerosols, no predating gulls, and no floating or distressed fish around Mission Bay, Copano Bay, Aransas Bay, Mesquite Bay and Cedar Bayou.
Corpus Christi Bay
 While conducting routine monitoring sampling TPWD staff observed no aerosols, no predating gulls, and no floating or distressed fish around the Ingleside area or the Shamrock area.
 Reports of distressed menhaden were reported in Nueces Bay where the Nueces River discharges into the bay.
 Earlier in the week, dead fish were observed along the Corpus Christi Bayfront.
Upper Laguna Madre
 While conducting routine monitoring sampling TPWD staff observed no aerosols, no predating gulls, and no floating or distressed fish around the mouth of Baffin Bay, Alazan Bay, the "land cut", or Bird Island Basin.
 Reports of distressed menhaden were observed from the JFK Causeway south to Nighthawk Bay.
Rio Grande Valley (Lower Laguna Madre)

 TPWD Gulf trawl surveys out of the South Padre Island area observed no indication of red tide. Observations included no aerosols, no dead or distressed fish, and no indication of discolored water.
 Water samples collected by the Red Tide Rangers along the beach of South Padre Island indicate low to moderate concentrations.
Lower Laguna Madre
 Water samples collected for K.brevis by the Red Tide Rangers around the Brazos Santiago Pass area indicate moderate concentrations.
 Water samples collected for K.brevis by the Red Tide Rangers north of the Queen Isabella Causeway indicate low concentrations.
Fish Kill

 No new updates during this reporting period.
Lower Laguna Madre
 While conducting routine monitoring sampling TPWD staff observed no aerosols, no predating gulls, and no floating or distressed fish about 10 mi south of the mouth of the Arroyo Colorado and 4 miles east.
 A report of a menhaden kill observed near the swing bridge in Port Isabel.
