It took me about 2 years to catch a shark, but I finally got one. We unhooked it and released it pretty fast, I didn't see a tag in it. I was wondering about Tagging sharks. Where would I get them? Do you need to be licensed? Do you need any special tools? Will it make the shark really mad and cause him to kill me?
Also I was wondering about eating them. I have a chart with whats legal and whats not. I was wondering what you would keep? If keeping a blacktip to eat would you keep something 3 foot or 5 foot? Also should you keep a male or a female, and how could you tell what it is? How could you tell if a female is pregnant? I wouldn't want to do anything to hurt the population or be a jerk to wildlife, but I would also like to try one.
Thanks |

Easiest way to get tags would be to sign up for the Texas Shark rodeo. I believe this year's deadline has passed but you can get a team together and ready for next year. You don't need a license and they will provide you with the tools or how to get them. If you tag them quickly it will minimize the shark's chances of killing you.

Honestly I think shark tastes terrible, and there are dozens of other fish that are waaay better table fare. Male sharks have claspers (I'll let you google that one), females do not. _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |

X2 TSR all the way. That's the easiest way to get your tags.
I do disagree on the sharks tasting bad though. IF I choose to keep one I like the barely legal ones. 2 to 3 feet. I think they taste ok if you bleed them and ice them quickly. Of course I usually fry them and what's not good fried? _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| I too like the smallish ones. I think they taste good. I coat mine with olive oil, salt, pepper and fresh chopped rosemary and throw them on the grill. |

I'm guessing you cut it into steaks?
Sounds good. |

I got my tags probably back in the 90's from the National Marine Fisheries Service Apex Predator Program. I have yet to use a tag, however. I'm not a good fisherman and I don't go often, but I'll use them eventually.
Small sharks aren't bad table fare if bled promptly. Cutting them into steaks is the norm. The big ones have mercury so it's best not to eat them. |
