Here in Texas I understand that all trailers over 16 feet will have installed brakes. With a budget of $5k, more than I wanted to spend on a couple of boat / trailer combos, it kills the deal when the included trailer can't pass inspection with any brakes. I'm looking at $500 per pair, not including new wheels, and that's IF the axle was manufactured for brakes with a backing plate. Retro fitting a tandem trailer is going to gobble up more than half the cost of a whole new one, just in parts alone.

Q: has anyone been up against this issue having a trailer w/o brakes (over 16 feet) and failed inspection? And what they had to put in $$ as a DIY project or had to pay someone to have their old trailer have brakes retro-fitted?

I put disc brakes on our center console trailer for $350 a couple years back, got tired of the drum brakes constantly freezing up. I'll never buy a trailer without them again.

The work was messy but pretty easy. Did it start to finish along with a bearing job in an afternoon.

Will most like;y go the disk route IF I bite.

Thanks all that replied. So sad that many boat deals are going to be much more scrutinized now that the cost of such an upgrade exceeds $1000. I may be passing on the "Shudder's full", a boat that actually won a Marlin turney a couple of years ago. The trailer weight & the boat comes in at 4550, 50lbs over! Can't put a price on safety however. I'll have to "suck it up & move on".

Also thx for the link to chief's thread, that is what I was looking for.
