I've seen big gar in the river near LaBonte (sp) park.
I've never tried to catch one, but I've heard chunks of mullet makes good bait fished freeline. |

| Steel wire leader and 4-6" mullet. Cut a very small incision just behind the head of the mullet. You just want to break the skin. Run that steel leader down its back and out around the tail. Stay between the skin and the "meat" of the fish. The hook should sit right on top of the head of the bait. This way the bait will stay alive much longer and be far more active than if you stab it with a hook. Believe it or not gar prefer live bait ,and yes the Nueces River still has big gar even though the are harder to find. FYI you should try lake corpus christi in Mathis and choke canyon. |

We hooked a Gar bigger than a Kayak on a limb line. It ripped the line from my hands and the line crushed the large net closed. By its tail it was as thick as my two knees if you put them together. We tried for 20 Minutes to get it in the boat. It broke the 500# line and left us wet and wishing we had brought some gloves. If you hook one over 6ft in a Yak you better have a plan. Black Salties work great on a circle hook and you could catch a big yellow cat as well. They catch them off of Copano Bay Pier on Hardheads also. _________________ Fin in the wind |
