Been a board lurker for some time trying to get a feel for the area, and now its time to make my debut! I'm Don. Grew up in Jersey, fished from Cape May to Cape Cod my first 24 years. Moved to AZ and was there for 11 years. (NO SALTWATER! Oh the agony!) Moved back to the East, NY, even though I swore I never would. Been here 2 years to many, and it is time to go! Will be arriving in Rockport, (hopefully for good), the first week of August. Have a house, yak, more tackle than ANYBODY needs, a boat and 4wd. All I need now are some fish! Hope to run across some of you on my journeys once I get down there. Now my questions; Are there Stone Crabs in the Rockport area? Have read about them in TX, but have never heard mention of them on here. How does one catch them? Thanks in advance, Don

There are lots of stone crabs around there but many will be maimed with only one claw. When that happens you can be sure the Gollas have been by Razz
When I was a kid and before we knew what vibrio was I came down with some of dad's coworkers. One of them took us to an oyster reef at low tide and we literally ran our arms down a hole grabbed the stone crabs around their wrists and pulled them out. Several times you could feel a claw slowly going down on your finger and then you'd jerk your arm out slicing it in a few places on the oysters. Fun but not a great way to get a lot to eat Smile It also tore my tennis shoes to pieces.

Caribbeansoul, yes, there are stone crabs in the area, snorkeling along the jetties is another good place to find some......when you get here in august, the water should be clear by then....

there are lots of other great things to do besides crabs though!!!!

Stone crabs can be found down here just about anywhere there is hard structure for them to hide. Just make sure you are aware of the laws regarding them.
There are some monster stoners on the jetties tucked into the rocks.

Take your light and try the flats near the lighthouse or around any shallow oyster reefs at night. If you fish those areas first during the day you can gauge by the number of holes with shucked oysters around them how big the population/harvest is likely to be. Crab traps set near such areas often catch a few stone crabs along with the blues.
