A little about me first. We come down to PINS a few times a year to shark fish primarily. In the past, I used to fly fish for trout, and while in the surf on a few occasions, have wanted to try fly fishing there.

this year im going to give it a shot..and purchased a Beulah 7/8 Bluewater rod. I realized its a bit light for the surf, but I also wanted a decent rod for throwing streamers to largemouth bass, and something a step up from my trout rod ( a sage 5 weight). Looking for a reel for it as well. Because there is a chance for larger fish like tarpon, and those running jacks, Im guessing a quality drag is going to be important.

Ive started my research online, and thought Id throw a posting here to "light the fires" so to speak, and get things going.

If we come down there in the middle of march, Ill be bring the fly rod, and looking for a few recommendations for PINS fishing. Line/leader selection, tips, tricks, etc. I tie flies a bit as well, and over the winter made a selection of clousers in different colors that im sure would be decent for PINS too.

Lets get this party started; post a few tips or tricks that yall use when fishing PINS, fly selections, species at what time of year...etc.

Got it bud, thanks for the info. Its a great start. Been shark fishing down there, but Fly fishing the surf will be a whole different game. Not sure how doable it will be in the spring. Our past trips have been windy in the spring, and I seem to remember that when we came in august and September, we had some calmer days (at least in the AM and evening).

I am really looking forward to some fly fishing in the surf this year. This was an awesome trip from a couple of years ago.

Ive watched that video 4 or 5 times over the winter...LOL. its one of the reasons I decided I wanted to try fly fishing from the surf actually.

Can you list a few patterns you used while out there? Approx size and color would help.

It was just a lucky day. I had plenty of vacation and a perfect window opened up in the middle of the week. I am moving this Friday to our new house directly across from Bob Hall so I should be able to do a lot more fly fishing in the surf this year.
