I didn't start a war with my other questions - this one might do it. Which boat manufacturers have a reputation for making "dogs" (with apologies to our canine friends)?? To someone buying his first "Big Boy Boat", they all look nice and shiny and oh so pretty. I will be buying used though unless I hit the Lottery and then who cares!!! Have been looking at Boston Whaler Montauk 17's as a boat to use in the bays and close offshore.

My suggestion to anyone considering a new hull and engine combination is to learn what guides are running the combination you think you might want, and can afford and hire them for a half or whole day. Hopefully, they fish like you prefer to such as, bait or artificials, or wading or not. Of coarse, if you can coordinate some friends with you to share the guides fees, then the cost is more appealing. One point I might mention, is it's difficult to find hulls which perform well in the Gulf, and also get skinny enough to fish most of the Texas bays. The further south you go in the bays, the shallower a hull needs to perform. BTW, I don't think the Whaler you mentioned is very applicable to the Texas bays unless you want to stay in the channels and deeper areas of the bays. Good luck on your choice.

Please don't confuse me with boaters who are in a great hurry to get somewhere and want to be able to jump up on plane in 4 inches of water. I have no problem with using an electric motor to toodle along until I get to water deep enough for a bigger motor. I'm 65 and don't do much "fast' these days. I also have a 4 hp kicker I can mount for motoring along in shallow water. Have a 15 hp that could serve the same purpose.

Tyler seems to have been able to use his Montauk successfully, although I don't know exactly how he fishes.

I know lots of fellows that swear by their Blue Waves. As do others who like their Alumacrafts, AlWelds, Transports, Dargels, and so on. It depends on what kind of fishing you plan on doing for the most part and where do you plan on fishing. As mentioned earlier if you plan on navigating mostly in ICW and similar channels with an occasional trip into the adjoining flats...whether by trolling, poling, pushing, sailing, or SeaTow...than just about any boat will do. If you are a newbie and want to explore a lot you might want to consider an aluminum boat which is a little more forgiving of our "oops, did not see that oyster bed" and other obstructions. My neighbor ran all over Aransas Bay in his 13' old time Boston Whaler Sport powered by a 50hp and caught more fish than most HEB's have in their deli. My other neighbor who is recently retired from guiding will run nothing but a Transcat(which I should have mentioned earlier...not sure what a Transport is) which he could take in the aforementioned 4-6" of shallow H20.
I am not sure there is really a "dog" out there as you will have as many opinions on that as there are liars on any fishing forum you might want to visit(the I caught ? many kind of prevericators(sp?) as opposed to the other kind.

Whatever you get, just please don't buy a pontoon boat and anchor in the middle of the ICW

Yep. And that dude gave me the finger as I came by. Didn't realize running in the ICW is frowned upon...

Blue Waves will fall apart if used in the Gulf even on a calm day.

I still say the Whaler you mentioned. I have had one myself and three others in the family.

For your purposes, it will be all you need and then some.

Since you mentioned a kicker motor, you are set. That is what I did for several years if I wanted shallow. Also, you have a back up in the gulf.

My two cents.

I will go further than TopDog. Blue Waves are the Dodge Neon of the boat world.

Is everyone that's bashing a blue wave know this from personal experience or is it just that blue wave owners tend to be the "weekend warrior" type? Just curious.

not necessarily....but if the shoe fits....

Blue Waves are speed robbing hulls....although they hang good motors on them, they are dogs in the water.....get a big gas tank and be prepared to fill it a lot....also that will limit your range, or how many close trips you get out of one tank....

on a similar note, they plane like a kitchen table with an outboard.....unless you have a perfectly balanced load, they run on one side of the keel or the other....and the back and forth when turning is actually a bit hazardous....

their financing is why there's so many on the water; not their utility or gas mileage.....

oh, and if I'm not clear enough, they are turds of the boating world....I've been in four, and had the "joy" of driving a few of them....all the same, except the really big one will stay on keel, but still a dog....
