|
|
I have been living in GTMO Cuba for 2 months now. The water is pretty nice. I haven't gotten offshore much yet because the boat I just bought broke! I have been in the bay alot. I have caught about 10 snook, 2 tarpon, and 1 Cubera Snapper. I have been slaying the lobster and freediving alot. I bought a Kristal Electric reel but I havent used it yet since the boat broke. I have tried trolling back and forth at the mouth of the bay but havent had any luck. I have seen about 50 turtles and a handful of sharks. Whale shark siting have been reported but i havent seen one yet.
I sure miss Texas and I am hoping to get back to Corpus or at least San Antonio after this tour. I must say the oil rigs in Texas are the easiest pickings I have ever had for shooting big fish!
PLEASE HELP!!!! 2001 70hp johnson. I was trying to go out today and the engine was only hitting on two cylinders I checked to make sure the carbs were all working and none were stuck. This is a common problem with these motors. After confirming they are all getting fuel I check the spark.
It seems the top cylinder isnt getting spark. I can pull the plug wire on the other two cylinders and hear tick tick tick tick tick. The top one had no arching. I then switched the wires to see if that would make a difference. No change. I then switched the top and middle coil and now all the cylinders seemed to have spark but still not getting the power it should.
I can now pull a spark plug wire from any of the cylinders and it continues to run on ANY 2 cylinders and never seems to run on all 3. I am thinking it is a power pack but I dont know. any insight? Parts and knowledge around here is limited. If you have recommendations I will gladly try them.
Mail takes a month to get here so I would like to get the right part the first time around!

| Just went back and changed plugs. I now know for sure the top cylinder is not getting spark. I cleaned the carbs already and it is not a fuel issue. I swapped the bottom coil for the top coil and still no spark on the top cylinder |

| Make sure that the sense lead usually orange from power pack goes to the corresponding coil/cylinder. They are the firing order. I usually swap wires only. IE center sense lead to top coil and plug wire to top cylinder and so on. Pull the plugs and use them as spark testers and watch them. Of course they need to be grounded unless you have a cheap checker. If it doesn't fire then its the coil. If it does its probably that lead from the pack(bad). That's not saying you couldn't have a problem with the stator or timer base and related wiring. However USUALLY that is not the case. Also have you run a compression test? They need to be at least 100 or more pounds each and all within 10% of each other. I have chased my tail many years ago on 1 due to low compression. Hope this helps. PM me if I can help anymore. |

good advice so far, also check all your grounds....pull all the bolts holding coils and powerpack off one at a time and clean them....check those ground wires really well to see if there's a bad ground...
in addition, doing electrical troubleshooting at night can be extremely revealing.....have someone turn it over while in the dark and you will be able to see shorts....sometimes something as easy at dielectric grease on all the fittings can make it run like a top if you have mediocre connections...
if you swapped coils and can't get spark to the top focus on the powerpack grounds and leads....sounds like your coils are ok....

| You can get a lot more snook and tarpon in the gtmo river! I was stationed there from 07-09 fished 2-3 times a week . Free lined herring against the mangroves with a 4/0 circle hook was my rig of choice!! Mangrove cubera jacks snook and a few tarpon almost every trip! Is mike McCord still the environmentalist there? He had a red skeeter bay boat and is an awesome guy and fisherman. |
