I am currently looking to purchase a kayak (most likely from Craigslist) and was looking for some insight on what to target. I would mainly be using it for inshore around the Rockport area however I would really love to get into taking it offshore to get some cobia and kings.
What kayak would yall recommend and any other gear or tips to offer?
Thanks! |

I would do a search here and on www.texaskayakfisherman.com.
Look at ocean kayak trident/prowler model and the tarpon 140 from wilderness. Cuda 14 is nice also. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

Go to a kayak dealer's "Demo Day" and paddle a bunch of different kayaks. Or paddle some friends kayaks.
Either way, no two kayaks paddle the same and what suits one peron here on the board may not suit you. A lot has to do with height/weight and physical condition.
Kayaks are a lot like women, you have to try out quite a few before you settle on one. |

I have owned several Ocean kayaks and love the Malibu II for both beach and bay! Get yourself familiar with falling out and getting back in and remember to strap EVERYTHING down.

Consider your size for a starting point. I'm on the smaller side of things so I can get away with thin/faster 12-14ft kayaks and still be very comfortable. There are some nice big boy kayaks out there but just remember it's always give and take. There are some eye candy kayaks out there but try to paddle it and you may find yourself huffing and puffing...lol
There is no such thing as a perfect kayak, you just need to find one that suits your needs the best. In corpus I always recommend 12-14 ft kayaks because of our winds here locally.
Walk into a few kayak rentals and ask what they recommend or give my buddy a call

Second on heading over to tkf there is a wealth of knowledge and an awesome classified section
Oceans are really popular down here
We actually just sold our ocean trident so the mr could get a Viking pro fish, thing is sweet!
I'm personally getting a Moken 12.5
Also try before you buy and RESEARCH _________________

| I'm rockin' Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game. If you roll in this yak it is your own fault. Wide with a lot of room and the more weight you put in the bow the faster it tracks. Scrambler XT is a good starter kayak. Hobies are awesome but from what I have read they are not the best if it is a rougher day offshore but I could be wrong. I still want one though lol. Try it before you buy it. |

Have any of you had experience with a heritage redfish 14ft kayaks? How are they and would it be a good yak for inshore as well as paddling to the rigs?
Thanks! |
