Buying an extra spinning combo from cabelas friday, along with hooks going with 1/0 and 4/0 already have 20lb line, 80lb leader line, gotta get some sinkers. Other than that i have an old rod and reel im getting greased up and ready. We are heading down tuesday to be there Wed-Saturday. Temps look like 60s so not gonna be doing much swimming (more time to fish as far as im concerned) Of course gonna be fighting crowds but we will make our way to some fishing spots. Whats it loook like we will be fishing for? gonna be on the south jetty mostly might venture onto caldwell pier. What bait should we get? and ive been looking at various set ups for my leaders one that really intrigued me was one where you set it up with 2 hooks, i was thinking one 1/0 and one 4/0 maybe or just set up my two rods differnetly somehow and try two different baits one on each? Not sure what everyone runs but as far as fishing from those locations whats the standard?

Cant wait to get down there dont reckon ill see anyone on here since its the spring break crowd but hey ill take the times i can get!

Adding a question here, lets say that some shark where close enough to catch, what would be the better location for that off chance? Caldwell pier or south jetty?

Shrimp, crab, or sealice in combination with fishbites of your choice.

Patriot,

Your not the only one. Spring break is the first trip my family gets to make each year. Although I could do without the crowds my crew still gets the fishing done.

Our break wasn't as early, or as cold, last year so we had some great fishing.
Hardest part was keeping our high schoolers focused enough to keep yaking baits out.

We'll be on the sand from Sat-Thurs and it looks like it will be all about whiting this year.

Good luck to ya, I can't stand the crowds and that is the reason I'll be heading up north. I'm bassackwards like that. I'm sure you'll be able to score something more than whiting. Was down there this past weekend helping a friend with a truck issue on the beach and still managed a 19 3/4 black drum. If I were you I'd stick to the basics.......shrimp w/fishbites. Sea lice and crab have been hard to come by for me. I mainly fish the surf and avoid the piers/jetties, due to the crowds. Double drop leaders will do fine and just keep cycling through baits until you find one that works.

Yeah im hoping we can get into a variety of fish, maybe over the next 7 days the water will warm up a bit! looks like 70s early in the week!

Any chance at catching some good fish at night? we still are wanting to go out one morning like 2-3 on the jetty and get some lines out in the dark!

Also fishing the jetty whats generally the better way to go about it cast towards the beach side or the channel side? or get to the end and cast as far as you can? Wink

Also what kind of fish might one catch that you could cut and use for bigger fish like are whiting a fish you catch and can turn into cut bait for some bigger fish?

Around here I go bowfishing get some Carp cut them up and use em for catfish!

Whting make good cut bait. Cut into steaks and thread the hook through one time on the upper back.

We usually try not to use the bigger ones for bait, in case nothing else is caught, will have something to stink up the grease.

Whiting makes the best ceviche. Probably not going to see it get warm enough for the Pomps to run.

Looks like it's going to lay down enough that I'll bring the yak just in case something toothy happens by.

Water temps right now in the 50's. With the Spring Breakers and left over Walleye Lund folks it should be rocking. If all else fails, build some sand castles.
