march is a little cold for most sharks except sandbar shark.. rays, too, but the Gulf always has a surprise.
squid (cheap) will catch rays, gafftops and of course, hardhead catfish...(you'll learn to hate them soon enough... don't let'em fin ya...)
shuffle your feet while in the water (step down on a stingray and your done for the day or even more) the stingray shuffle kicks them away.
double drop tourist leaders and a 1-2 oz weight w/ dead shrimp, squid, convience store frozen mullet will usually get ya a bite... 2/0 or larger circle hooks...
if the seaweed is thick and constantly wads up your rig... go find a party... |
Awesome thank you!
Now from what i see some of the common fish to catch are redfish and drum, mullet the right bait for these? also am i hooking live mullet or dead mullet?
As far as fishing from jetty, pier etc do i just cast as far as i can and let er sit on the bottom? |

Okay ive updated the original post to reflect any current questions and push the answered sections down!
Thanks again everyone, having fun reading and looking at all the fish caught, hope to do some good when im down there, ill post the updated begining for anyone who comes to the bottom!
At this time i know my set up as far as rod reels, ill be buying some 20lb braid line to put on them, so any suggestions on best kind/brand?
Night fishing, a few of us want to do a night fish meaning either stay late into the night 2-3 am or get up and start fishing at 2-3 am what would be the better option? Getting out on the south jetty at night is honestly what we would like to do, will fishing there be just as good as if we went and set up on the HC pier?
As far as jetty fishing in general at any time is it the same or better/worse than the pier?
When fishing the jetty what is the best way, my instinct is to go all the way to the end and cast as far as i can into the ocean haha is it better to cast towards the channel, out into the ocean, or into the ocean but the beach side of the jetty? and is it like i assume cast as far as you can? haha
Now another thing is the rigging, what does everyone use as far as leaders, and bait rigging? just a simple weight, leader, hook, and throw? or any special ways to set it up? Ive read a little about a lemon rig?
From all the reading ive done so far, looks like mullet will be the best bait, now from there is the best way to just cut them and put em on the hook or do you fish with them live? Lets say no mullet available because its spring break and the shops are sold out what is my next best option i dont mind getting in the beach and rocks looking for crab etc!
Last question i can think of for now (sorry for so many) I know the main fish i see that get caught are Redfish, Black drum, trout, sharks, rays, and jack? the cool one with the yellow fins (gah i know that has to sound horrible to you guys that fish this all the time but im still learning names!)
For each of those fish is the general set up going to be the same hook with mullet on it and its just the luck of whoever gets the bait first?
Gonna be hitting up a few stores this weekend to get some tackle as well. will update when questions get answered or if i have more!
And ill keep on reading everything i can find! |

-I personally have power pro on our rigs 30# i believe and then topped with mono (we get them strung at roys tackle because I am an idiot with knots)

-have not fished out there but on the island our best times were 11-2ish am could have been better but I act older then I am and enjoy sleeping

-just depends on the water, walk slow (leave a buddy at the truck) and see whats going on, and for petes sake dont brother in law someone unless you have no other choice
Now another thing is the rigging, what does everyone use as far as leaders, and bait rigging? just a simple weight, leader, hook, and throw? or any special ways to set it up? Ive read a little about a lemon rig?
-we generally use Carolina rigs (?) which is a slider egg weight, swivel, leader then hook. we tend to use 3-4 size owner hooks (my favorite)

-we tend to hook them through the mouth and out the head, if its dead already through the back and slits to expose more fish scent?

-in regards to the rays, for the love of god if you are releasing just cut the barb ONLY if you have to. DO NOT cut the whole tail. A ray can regrow a barb, not a tail. The barb is the rays only defense against predators.

I added my remarks with a (-)

I like your obsesive compulsive thinking about fishing.
You don't know the half of it. When you see that rod bend over double and hear the drag squealing and the line is peeling off.
Fishing at the local lake will just not seem the same.
I'm not an old salt at surf fishing I'm know just enough to get a few fish.
We will be down for spring break too but not until the Monday after your gone. I have fished the jetty at PA but I really like fishing the beach better. I have long rods and short rods and would like to think I can cast 100 yards but get some bait and waves and wind in your face and its not really 100.
I'd go fishing with you if you were going to be around between the 17th and the 21st.
We don't have a 4x4 so we are limited on where we can go.
PINS and St.Joe island have taught me a lot about shark fishing and the most important thing is I had no idea what I was doing and Please God let me hook another 5ft Blacktip. I've paid my dues and I have the right tackle now. Just give me another chance. I want to hear the drag make the noise it is supposed to make.
I might be a little obsessed with this.
Good luck man and hold on to your rod. And if its spiked make sure you run the drag way off so it almost free wheels. And if your casting weight with braid on a spinner, crank the drag way down so you don't cut your finger off.
Ya good luck. Remember getting broke off is something good. It means you have the right bait. |
