Got offered a trade on a Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 kayak... now, im looking to start kayaking but dont know if this is one of those trades im going to regret doing only because I dont know anything about kayaks... any tips advice...opinions ... plz share

take it for a trial run, while kayaks are pretty consistent the people sitting in them are not, some people like one yak over another it all about how they feel when you are sitting in them and fishing from them the best way to know if it will work for you is to test it out on the water preferably on an actual fishing trip some yaks are comfortable for a short time but after a few hours not so much

So I guess its safe to say that first I should learn to drive a kayak before fishing on a kayak?...lol.. in all, I'm really only trying to chase slot reds and trouts and smaller edible fish and of course every once in a while yak out some bait... not trying to go all pro and since I live in an apt, size of kayak really plays a factor since I don

First - is your trade worth it.
Second- sounds like a 10 foot kayak. Not ideal out here in flats and bays.

If you want to get into kayaking this may not be the best approach and it can go both ways. You may enjoy it and want to continue or keep you from goin forward based on your experience.

I started out with pelican kayak and enjoyed it. Then I paddled a prowler 13 and the efficiency and stability made me dive into the sport.

HEre are my two cents, for what they are worth...

I wouldn't do it. A 10 foot sit inside kayak is not what you want for around here, and for fishing you definitely would want a sit-on-top (many reasons - stability, getting in and out, standing in it, storage, customizing, not sinking, etc)

Best case scenario, you get it and find that you like kayaking and you want to upgrade ASAP to something you can really fish out of easily and handles the bays (or BTB) very well.

Worst case scenario, you make the trade and don't like the kayak. Even worse, your experience is so bad that it puts you off from kayak fishing altogether, which would be a shame. Go rent one from Jerry B's or Wind and Wave. Very Happy

Don't listen to rumrunner he is 6 foot and paddles a 5 foot kayak. Haha just kidding he has a goos point your never gonna know how stable or comfortable "YOU" are unless you take it out and use it for a few hours. If the guy wants to do a trade ask him to borrow it for a few days and get out there and fish out of the thing. Things to consider are how your feet will rest, lower back support and gear management.

In the bays in may be ok but if you try to BTB or run baits you may sadly disappointed in my opinion. I have 2 kayaks and both are sit on top for a reason. Comfort, safety and the fact that getting back in after getting out is a whole bunch easier, especially in the water. And you will get the chance to do just that at some point.. Smile
