In my experience if you are boat fishing go with the most expensive Shimano you're comfortable with. I have fished several stradics 5+ years and a Sustain for much longer than that but they rarely go with me to the surf or in the yak.

If you wade/kayak more and are looking for durability considering it is going to get wet out on the water Penn's have been awesome for me in this department.

I have fished the lagoon from shore, packery from shore and been in the surf. If your reels don't get saltwater IN them just hose them off at home. I am using 40-60$ combos from Dicks in NY and they are still going. If you are in the surf you have to take care of them allot more. If you get hit with a wave and go down you have to take them apart, but its not hard at all. I have had my Daiwa and Abu Garcia spinners seized solid after being submerged and not cleaned ( oops! ) Open them up, find the stuck bearing or part and work in some WD-40. After it moves free lube it with some kind of grease or oil, I found 20w50 motorcycle oil from a squirt can works pretty good. Grease is good in the gears and bearings but oil seems to make the drags work very smooth. If a bearing does get killed Roy's has bearings in stock and will match one up for you and depending on what you need are only like $10. I asked what kind of reel would be good to get soaked in the surf and they said NONE.
But I did get a PENN 10500 Spin Fisher for Christmas and have soaked it probably 25 times and only hose it off when done, have not taken it apart yet. They are sealed well and I am VERY happy with it.

For light duty saltwater I love my Penn 440SG. I also have a Fin-Nor Inshore that has held up just as well!

My real work horses are my Okuma Avengers and Epixors. I have had these things fully submerged for extended periods of time while casting in the surf. I took one Avenger apart when I busted a handle on it and fount that the entire inside was sealed with a rubber gasket. I've never had a problem with any of them and they are my go to surf casting reels so they see a ton of use. Same thing with my Penn and FinNor, my go to bait catching reels in the surf and I've never had to open either one up.

I wish I could say the same about my Quantum Smoke Inshore baitcaster. Damn near ruined the thing at Sharkathon this year after taking a single wave. WFT man, that thing is supposed to be made for the salt and it cost a small fortune! Heck, I have a Lews Tournament pro that has been submerged in saltwater and is still working just fine...

For surf and the jetties all I use are Daiwa BGs (black and gold series) SOB's are simple, easy to clean and maintain, and last FOREVER.

For more of a new school reel I'd look into the Quantum Smoke Inshore for trout/reds or the Boca for surf/jetties/offshore.

I like Penn on the beach and Shimano in a boat. Van Staal if you have the funds.

I have Shimanos, Penns, and some older Abu Garcias. I have had other stuff, but it doesn't stick around like those three. I don't view these as disposable like I do other brands.

Started off rinsing reels when we would get home from fishing with the hose. Just didn't help. But were told it was better to just dip reel in water. Have found RO water (reverse osmosis) water is the best. Dosen't have all the calcium....everthing else that is known to clog pipes. Has worked great! We just keep a bucket in the garage. Change about once a month. When I empty the bucket there is alot of sediment at the bottom.

Quantum Boca:

The new style has impressed me. After use and abuse, it's still working great. Kicked a bull red's butt yesterday on my Boca 50.

Daiwa Saltist Spinning:

Used it a lot with no problems at all with it's performance after many trips to the surf.

The only way to go, at least for me is the Okuma "Azul" (AZ-90) with the large capacity spool. Tough as can be for a spinning reel, and it holds 320 yards of 20# green "Ande" line. I add a 50# "Ande" green line "shock leader" to absorb the shock of power-casting a #3 or #4 spider weight plus two live baits into the surf. You can still find some of these awesome reels brand new in the box by searching online and typing, "Okuma AZ-90" in the search box. I have 5! Two in use (for 8 years), and 3 still in the box for my retirement fishing experience. Worth looking into!!!

I have several Shimano reels and they have held up well. Most impressive was the Shimano I dredged up out of the packery channel while fishing reds.
Completely taken apart regreased and packed bearings, reassembled and given new life....there was alot of sand and calcium build up on the inner part of reel but over all it held up in the water for several days I'm guessing.....works like a charm now.....

For the past 3 years i've been using Wright & Mcgill spinning reels and rods(flats blue rods and Sabalos reels). This past weekend was D_ck's Sporting Goods grande opening in Corpus and Blair Wiggins was there promoting his Flats Blue inshore and Surf rods and reels. Buy the rod and the reel is free!!! i had to buy another inshore and surf combo. they have been really good and no complaints whats so ever.
