Thought I would stir the waters with a discussion on fishing reels since others have been doing the same. I must say that my Penn reels are by far the best reels I have ever had. I currently have (1)6/0 (1)309 (2)209 (1)9m and (1)Beachmaster. The beachmaster looks like an older version of the 309. These reels have seen some major action and have performed flawlessly. I mostly use my 209's on 10 foot Penn rods rigged with 20lb mono. These suckers are over ten years old and have never failed me. They cast like a rocket and have pulled many Reds, BDrum, Shark(3-6ft) and other species. These reels are easy to use, easy to maintain and are very affordable. Would love to hear other's opinion on what reels you prefer. _________________ Fishing is my addiction |

Ive got a 9/0, a Tib 6/0 extra wide , a regular 6/0, a 309, a 209, and an older spinning reel. I haven't used the larger 3 much, but the 209 and 309 are my surf work horses. They are both on shorter rods, but I've been meaning to get some longer ones.
For my trout rods I use an ambassador on a 7' quantum pole, and a shimano 200e7 on a 7'6" all-star. |

There are more expensive reels made these days, some with a faster retrieve and a better drag system. Saying that, I put my 30 year old Penn 4/0's, 210's and 309's back into action this summer after sitting in a closet for 10 years. They performed great with no tackle failures all summer long. The older ones with the hard plastic handles are great reels that can last a lifetime, if taken care of! |

I own both shimano and penn reels and I cant say i have an allegiance to one more than the other. Im not to picky on brands and im willing to try different brand/model reels as long as they PERFORM. I do however notice some difference between the shimano's and penn's. My saharas feels lighter and a bit more comfortable than my battles which would be better for finesse fishing but the battles do feel more durable and i love the penn drag system. I think it just all depends on the type of fishing you do _________________ Work is for people who dont know how to fish! |

Been a Penn guy all my life. An obsession I picked up from my grandad.
I haunt pawnshops for them, picked up an old 350 level-line the other day. Drag parts are on the way for a rebuild.
All my offshore and spinners are Penn. I have a couple Diawa baitcasters and a Citica mainly for striper trolling and jigging, but over 30 Penn reels.
I hope the wife never gets around to counting them. |

problem i have with pawn shops around here is they want way to much. i did however pick up an old penn 180 baymaster for my sabiki rod the other day for 10$, new drag washers and a good clean and its good to go. i do love my penn fierce reels, when i ran my inflatable they took a hell of an abuse. _________________ If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am. |

Get away from the coast. They show up in pawnshops up here all the time. I passed on a Penn Senator recently, the guy would not separate it out from a bunch of other worthless stuff or I would have snagged it. I'm pretty sure he would have taken $40 out the door.
I usually get 309's etc for about $20, usually with the rod. I would love to find a Baymaster. |

At that price I would scoop up as many as I could. I never saw a fisherman with too many reels. _________________ Fishing is my addiction |
