Woke up this morning around 0500, having gone to bed with no conscious plan to fish this morning. Stepped outside to ZERO wind, so thought maybe I should go to an outdoor church service to thank the Weather Gods. After a couple cups of coffee, and part of the Sunday paper it was time to load up, and to my surprise it was raining....really??? Checked radar and it appeared to be a small cloud parked over my house. Waited it out for 10 minutes, finished loading, and it was out the door for the obligatory chorizo and egg taco. Quick bite, more coffee and I was on my way across the ship channel on the ferry. Arrived at the launch a little before 0700, and launched with the sky lighting up in the east, greeting a new day.
Paddled my way south, seeing plenty of bait, but no bird life and no fish. Few tail slaps from trout...keep paddling. Finally find the first one, around 23" on the SS Jr.
Keep searching, same deal, lots of bait, though not much else. Keep grinding and find number two.
More paddling, still amazed there is not a breath of wind. Is this really SOTEX?? Had to get my bird pic of the day.
Finally give up thinking that number three is in the cards, and paddle for the launch. As I am getting close there is tons of bait, and a few birds, and an occasional bait getting chased. So I think...one more cast...instant fish on, a trout around 21". Spent another 30 minutes or so chasing bait, though only a few blowups. Back at the launch by around 1100 with 2+1...still no wind.

Good report!
I got to participate in the calm morning, glass conditions as well. But I cheated on my girl, the Laguna, and was wading in Shoalwater Bay. If I squinted just a bit it looked like being in Nighthawk. Crystal clear water, no wind and we found what people call tournament reds. I don't fish tournaments so they are keepers to me. We were throwing topwaters and my buddy's $.99 cent sale Bomber was the fish favorite, eventually bending both sets of trebles. One of the coolest events of the morning was watching a huge wake approach us in two feet of water. Turned out to be a jack. Not wanting to be tied up for an hour we let her pass by. By 11:00 a boundary came thru pushing a stiff breeze and the temp dropped ten degrees killing the bite. |
