| Want to know what the most durable saltwater resistant bait casting reel to buy is. I have 5 shimano reels 3 are curados 2 are citicas and they all are locked up. Yes they are not the most expensive and yes I'm hard on them. I surf fish only and those things stay wet. I rinse them always but just don't get much life out of them. I would spend the big bucks but am afraid I would just ruin the reel from water exsposure . By the way, I don't think the ones I have we're cheap. Anyone have suggestions? I fish top waters and soft plastics only. |

I have those same reels I use in the surf the shaminos and I have learned over the years rinse them about every three or four trips. I oil and grease them about every two trips haven't had a problem with them in over about five years. I know it sounds a little dumb not to rinse them but has worked for me. Also back the drag off learned that one a long time ago. _________________ Been fishing since I was knee high to a grasshopper

From personal experience I have a Daiwa 153 sht that I have used and abused for 7 years with no probs. I used to fish the beach almost every weekend from early may till late sept. Then in 08 hit the yak in the bays and it got its workout every weekend.
I have had a Curado and Chronarch for a year now, but ever since shimano started having internals built in Singapore(I think), quality has fallen way off.
My next lure chunker maybe a zillion or try to find a couple older 153 sht's and rework them. I may have hit the lottery on my Daiwas but ill continue using them till I get a turd.
BTW, I am by no ways anal about taking care of my reels other then my shark reels. A decent rinsing was all most of my smaller gear gets. and maybe if im bored during deer season ill take them apart and clean and regrease. _________________ B.O.H.I.C.A. buddy |

You have newer reels the ones I have are the older ones that could be a reason why. I was given one of the newer citicas few years back and it's somewhere at the jetties locked up while catching some trout so I gave it to the fish. _________________ Been fishing since I was knee high to a grasshopper

Once salt gets into a bearing it's all over. The newer Shimanos have more bearings and the super-free bearing is fairly exposed. That is the first bearing that goes out on mine. Dunking a reel is no bueno. A little basic maintenance will keep them working. One tip is to not rinse them with a strong stream of water which will drive water inside the case. I will wipe mine with a wet cloth and touch up with reel oil on a q-tip. Shimano used to have some good demos on their website.
The old "greenie" Curados were bulletproof and I think only had three bearings. Two for the spool and one for the anti-reverse drive. Fewer things to get messed up.
So to go basic might be your answer. |

Im not a fan of more bearings...leave the casting to the angler and take out the extras...i use citicas, curados, and lews speed spools...i love the speed spool simply because the spool bearing doesnt die as quickly as the curado and you can maintain it without having to break down the entire reel to pop out the spool bearing.... _________________

When i rinse my curados I do it with hot water to melt the salt out. Cold water just hardens it up. That being said I have two that are going in to be repaired anyhow so there is no sure fire way to keep a salt water reel from at some point getting locked up espicially if you spend a lot of time in the surf getting hammered by waves. . Just comes with the territory IMO.
There is a guy here in Houston who does a great job on restoring reels to just about factory condition and is not very expensive. I think the name is Fischer Reel and Rod repair but I am not 100% sure. |

Have you tried an Abu Garcia? They seem to work very well for me. I have had one for several years. I always rinse mine off after every fishing trip and hit it with a little oil and do a few casts in the yard to distribute the oil inside a little. A good cleaning and greasing once a year is also a good recommendation. Take your reels to Roy's and have them gone through. You won't be disappointed. _________________ Where's the March Hare???.. |

| I have an 18 year old Chronarch 100A that I use almost daily, probably 50-60 surf trips a year, and still works as good (acutally better) than the day I bought it. The original chronarchs and curados with last forever if you take care of them. I wipe mine off everyday and break it down and clean/lube once a week. |

| Matthew's Reel Repair in San Antonio does a great job. Had one of my chronarchs overhauled and repainted by him and he did an amazing job.[/img] |
