I can see why it looked like someone used a sawzall to get those out. That's unusual to have them broken like that. We collected a bunch for Art Morris at TPW. They had a guy out in Palacious that was the "otolith god" who was the specialist at the time about ten years ago.

You know what they say, "You have to pay if you want to play." I'll go ahead and claim 7 years. Smile I'll throw in a lure you cannot buy anymore. A NIB Cordell Shifty Shiner in special order color(was going for around $25.00 on ebay a few years ago and is one heck of a trout killer) along with the lure I caught this fish on to whoever Luke say's is the winner. Hello Everyone:

If you guessed 7 you would be right! (Pictures Below)

Technically, this it is what we call a 7+ - A fish well into its 7th year and just turning 8 years old!!

That is about as old as they get. Thanks again for gulftrout donating the fish and Luke making the arrangements. Ruben Palacious with our group did the aging.

We recently received otoliths from a large male 27 inch spotted seatrout and were asked to analyze its age via otolith sectioning. Based on the cross sections we were able to determine the age of the fish to be a 7+ annuli year old fish just about to turn 8.

Previous Research

As most are aware, females are much more commonly observed at older ages than males; however the oldest individual ever recorded in Texas was in a study done in Galveston Bay, October 1981 through September 1982, which was a 12 annuli male trout (631mm long ~ 25 inches). This extended the known maximum lifespan of the spotted seatrout at the time. That fish was exceptionally old (especially for a male), and there is substantial scientific controversy as to whether that was a misreading - likely in my opinion. The typical maximum age for male spotted seatrout from all other studies is 8 annuli years. So, this fish is about as old as they get.

Starting to think this guy might know a little something about something. If he'd just quit using that mono filament nonsense...

there's a quote somewhere about age and treachery.....
certain things hold true despite what lotsa younger folks try to dispell....
( been there, tried it)( don't work)
there's a number of trips around a star we all gotta do before it finally sinks in....

ST[/quote] I still only use monofilament and nothing but ABU Garcia 5000 reels made in the early 90's. I guess Captain Mike and I at least have one small thing in common, mono line!! Wink Laughing

For anyone that did not see the original picture in my fishing report here it is again. These four trout are laying on an Igloo 90 Qt. lid with a measurement of 28" 0n top. The male trout I gave Luke was the bottom speck and it measured out at 27 1/4" long and weighed 6.25 lbs. on a certified scale. Thanks again Luke and everyone else for their time! Smile
