Not asking for specific honey holes, but I was wondering, just how many miles do some folks travel on an average rig trip? I usually hit the MP and Bob Hall rigs, maybe 15 miles total for the entire day, but was wondering about all those people I see blasting out of Packery and heading over the horizon.

I'm trying to get an idea of how much running vs fishing folks do on the longer trips

120+ miles one way to Hoover Diana/Nancen/Boomvang....3 days out there = plenty of running vs. fishing time....

feel free to hit any of those "honey-holes"....they're pretty good lately for yellow and black fin tuna.....GPS coordinates are available on line...

Generally speaking distance is a factor of target species. Billfish we run to the shelf and usually end up at lest 80 miles offshore, better wahoo and dorado to go along with it. Blue water trips targeting wahoo, dorado, and occasional bill fish are typically in the 50 mile range. Snapper fishing, just drop your line in the water, I am surprised they are not catching them in the surf yet. Best snapper we are running 20-30 miles out. This is the most general of ranges. We have seen a little bit of everything just about everywhere. We do all of spearfishing at Sow Snapper and Tarpon, basically 12 miles offshore and have plenty to hunt. Best tarpon I ever saw was spearfishing at duh, Tarpon rig, five foot tarpon looking at me from four feet away. I was just waiting for him to ask me what the stick in my hand was for, very much awe inspiring. Beautiful fish, giant eyes that look right at you. Very Happy

oh, sorry, guessing you were referring to the "rig trips"....the Samedan field off bob hall is right there, next rig field is the Ant hills around 40 miles out...

there's another rig field to the north out of packery that has a few rigs too...go check those out....

there ain't nothing in between Samedans and Ant Hills....

I don't fish rigs other than deep water ones for AJ's or the floaters; a ton of the good ones that held big mangroves are gone.

Plenty of wrecks in close to packery that hold fish though. Head south.

I've got a spot 21 miles from Port A where I do almost all of my snapper fishing.

Everything else is 40+.

Anthills rock! But as others have stated it depends on what you are targeting. I have killed wahoo, mahi, snapper, amberjack, african pompano, and seen 1 monster marlin right there around the ant hills. Dont be scared I would go there routinely in my 15 foot boston whaler!

It's not a matter of scared, it's a matter of the gas bill. Embarassed

Gasoline, it's what runs the bill up. Save your receipts you can get 20 cents a gallon back from the state comptroller.
