Hoisted the Jolly Roger over North Packery for the first time this season. My daughter graduated high school Thursday night, and a family fishing trip was in order to celebrate. Went down with two other families for the main purpose of making memories and enjoying the outdoors. Lucky for me, fish wasn't necessarily the main objective!
Started out the evening at Padre Pizzeria to get my fix. (Man, love their 'Kitchen Sink' pizza!) Set up the green lights and fired them up just about dark Saturday night to a moderate outgoing tide. Water was off-colored and no bait present except a limited amount of very small anchovy (about 1" long) right against the rocks. I figured that not much was going to happen until the tide swung around, and guessed that wouldn't happen until 2:00-ish Sunday morn. Turned all of the kids loose out on the lower rocks with live shrimp so they could have some fun before they passed out for the night. They caught some croaker and a couple of baby red fish in between the hermit crab roundups. They had a ball, and we had fun watching and helping them. Took the kids and wives back to the hotel about 1:00 and then returned to get serious about the fishing.
The tide started moving in about 1:00, and by 3:30 the water and bait conditions changed considerably. The small anchovy covered the water under the entire area of my green lights (a half-acre at least...), and the skippies were just boiling on them. That kept up until 5:30. Under the ladyfish was a scattering of trout in the 15" - 20" inch range. Pink spec rigs were the hot bait that night. I only finished up with four keepers, but they were pigs! Will eat well Monday night.
The prime fishing window was very limited (about 2 hours) and there were several thunderstorms passing by and lightning was popping too frequently for my comfort. However, we fished in spite of the storms and put a few fish in the box. Tore down camp at dawn, went back to hotel for a shower and nap, had lunch at Snoopy's, and then headed back to SA. Great weekend. As Tyler says "it is all about the fellowship".
Great start to the 2013 season. |
