Hey guys....
I have a question for you'll.
I have all my rods tied up with swivels..(see picture)....because I mostly fish with either a single or double leader or whatever. It's easy to put them on and take them off.

My question is.....is it a good idea to use a swivel when fishing artificial lures and/or spools?
I find it easier, with the swivel on, to switch lures if one lure is not working and I want to switch to something else.

But I am starting to think that maybe that's why they are not working as well because of the swivel.

Does the swivel somehow kill the action of the lure?

Is tying the lure straight on the line the best way to go?

Thanks,
Dave ~

Drop the swivels bud...tie directly to your lure. There useless IMO.

No.

That's why, I bring multiple rods when I go. When I cruise the beach I take 6 fishing rods with me. 1 heavy surf caster, 1 medium surf caster, 2 'medium heavy spinning rigs, one with a big topwater and one with a big spoon, and 2 smaller spinning rigs, one with a smaller topwater and one with a jighead and plastic.

There's an old saying among gunfighters that the fastest reload is another gun...the fastest lure change is another fishing rod.

I'm with Bighead 100% on this one.
Only reason I retie is if I'm cut or broke off.

I sometimes use snap swivels when I am using a pre-made spec rig in the surf or off of a pier but other than that I do not use them. If you are going to use a snap swivel, don't use a safety pin type as they are likely to open if they deform under load.

I often use crane or (less often due to cost) ball bearing swivels to join line to leader - usually braid to a short length of fluorocarbon - when I am using spinning reels as it can help with (but not solve) line twist. It is also sometimes easier to tie line to a swivel eye than to join lines - especially on very cold dark nights when the winds are up, the light is low and the hands are fumbling.

Generally speaking, the less hardware on your line, the better. A couple minutes a week of practicing knots such as the uniknot, improved clinch, palomar etc.. should get you through most applications needed for light tackle and you will soon find that it is just as fast or even faster to tie on a new lure or rig than to use the snap swivel.

Those are good for holding weights on leaders, slide line clips, & making cute bracelets

No swivels for plastics or tops for me. Use a shock leader and use a loop knot tie on your lure.

On spoons I use a swivel where I tie my leader to my main line to minimize line twist. I use palomar knots for attaching the swivel in this case and for attaching the spoon to the leader.

The only time I ever use a swivel is when I throw a spoon and only use the pigtail swivels that roy's sell.

Another good option is to use a norton quick clip, I think that's the exact name, there behind the counter at Roy's, it's a good alternative to a snap swivel, not as bulky and rated at 35lb test, just make sure you get the one with a barrel swivel to avoid line twist

Swivels like the one you show are for light weight action. Saltwater fishing calls for salwater terminal tackle. Your swivel is brass (shines when new) not good with certain species that will strike the "flash" of your swivel completely missing the real bait. I learned this the hard way!

"Spro" snaps and swivels is the what you want. They are blackend metal and made for "big" game fish. Your swivel will can be pulled and straightened by a strong fish. The "Spro" swivels have the locking end of the wire curved and wrapped around itself. This makes it extremely difficult to be pulled and straigtened. You choose the strength of swivel you want to order.

Swivels for lures, best not to. Swivels for cut-bait and spoons, yes.

Search: Cabela's, click on fishing, and then click on "swivels, snaps and clevises." All the advice on this site is excellent!

No swivels over here in the bay...But don't fish nuttin over 12# Ande, and a couple of reels with braid, nor do I throw anything that is supposed to twist(spoons)...I do use a flouro shock leader(Double Surgeons knot), and normally a loop knot...IMO the more a person does to make a lure not look natural kinda defeats the purpose...make sense?...That said I know alotta peeps that use 'em catch lotta fish...
