I had set up camp on Mustang Island just south of the park property next to the wood poles that seperate the park property from the county run beach Saturday afternoon! Wind was whipping pretty good past dark. Woke up to some of the lightest winds and great surf conditions I could expect. Fished most of the morning and only caught whiting! Had a great day with the dogs and love hanging out on the beach!

Hey workingbird, we fished near access road 2 on mustang yesterday too. The whiting were very thick. We also managed some smacks on spoons. As you said, the conditions were stellar and you could see every bar and gut with crystal clarity.

At one point, I walked through the wade gut, stood on the first bar and was casting a spoon over the 2nd bar to some busting bait. Just then, a 6ft+ shark cruised through the gut immediately in front of me chasing a pod of pony mullet. I was back on the sand very quickly. it came within 20 feet of me. Shocked

Was that in the morning? The wind in the afternoon realy kept me fron casting that far with my plugs yesterday afternoon. Were you having the same problem? If not, what rod and plug were you throwing?

Hey FIDO, I was throwing lures from about 1-4pm, even as the wind picked up, although the slightly choppier surf was smacking me right in the...well lets just say it made it tough.

In terms of tackle, I used a 7' med-heavy action tsunami spinning rod with a penn 5500 spinning reel spooled with 30# power pro and 20# fluorocarbon leader. The rod has a flexible tip but a stiff backbone, so it casts well with decent sized lures. its made for jigging.

I waded out to the first bar, so I did have the benefit of that extra distance. The lure I was throwing was a 1 oz chrome castmaster jigging spoon. I like the heavier metal lures like castmasters, large cordel spoons, diamond jigs, and mannolures because I can toss them into the wind much farther than plastic plugs or lighter spoons. The smacks will hit them all the same, as long as they are shiny.

Did all my fishing from Sunup till about noon! I also have had the shark thing happen to me last fall! It was Thanksgiving break from school and I was on the second sand bar in waist deep water. Bait everywhere and then suddenly the bait was gone. Thats when I had a 4-5' Bull shark pass in front of me and another the same size wooshed behind me! Felt the pressure wake from the one behind me! I think I walked on water and the term "wetsuit" took on a whole new meaning!

HAHA! I don't think it matters how long you've fished the surf. Every time I see one and I'm in the water, that weird you're-about-to-die survival mindset hits like a ton of bricks. There's no getting used to it for me!

Holy shiznit!! That's scary. Reminds me of something I saw on here a few years back, why do sharks circle us before attacking? They know we taste better when we're not full of poop.

I must have been parked not far from you Workbird. I was in the same spot in a blue F-150... My son and I landed a nice box of whitings as well. Went home and Filleted them and used up the last of the good beer batter. I must have had bad lighting or in a hurry cause damn I left a lot of bones behind lol... All fun though
