On the beachwalk that produced "Sea Monster", I came a cross a section of beach that was approximately 75-100 yards long that had no less than 5 different "wings" of ducks that had been removed. Some were paired up, others were single. None were done cleanly, so I figured that nobody was bringing their "catch" out to the beach for processing. I was intrigued by the sight, and I think I found the culprit this morning. Around the Whitecap Blvd. entrance, I came across this guy:
He had a duck in various stages of disrepair, and was none-to-happy about me trying to take a picture. I'm thinking an Aplomado Falcon, but I'm way better at fish ID than I am at bird ID. Any help would be appreciated.

| My birder son thinks it could be an Aplomado as well. It could also be a Peregrine as there is one that has been hanging out over by the PINS visitor center |

I initially thought it was a Peregrine also, but the chest was too white and the head banding was different. Cool sight, none-the-less. Although the duck didn't appreciate it, I gather!!!  |

My Audubon guy's response was Looks like a peregrine to me. Picture's a little grainy but I see some pretty heavy lambchop sideburns on him. Lots of birds of all kinds migrating nearshore in the past couple weeks and have had a number of peregrines come around and screw up my fieldwork.

Thanks!! Either way, it was cool to find out who was responsible for all the duck wings on the beach.  |
