IIRC our native gators don't live well or long in salt water, but wander out of the rivers and live in the salt water for a few days/weeks.
I grew up on Lake CC and they are not exactly common, but not exactly unusual either. From around George West on up the river basins (both Frio and Nueces) there are plenty. They are most common in the Aransas Delta area. Go to the Refuge...I have pictures of multiple 10'+ gators sunning themselves in ponds next to the tourist trails, and I have almost run over a couple running the highway up the coast to Port Lavaca.
Good thing they are (mostly) shy. _________________ Why is it that these days sales people seem to be as honest as I am knowledgeable? |

There are some BIG BOYS on the back side of San Jose Island... They look to be 6-8+ feet long from 200' in the air. There is 1 per lake, I am assuming they each sort of own their respective lake.
I have seen some big uns after being stationed in NOLA for 4 years and the ones we spot there are just as big... The buck whitetails over there are frigging huge as well. |

There WAS one on PINS - it used to hang in the pond near the pavement just south of headquarters and then moved about a mile and a half southeast to the evaporation ponds for the sewage treatment facility. National Park Service and TP&W personnel captured it a couple of years ago (I understand it was a very $hitty job) and it was relocated - not sure where.... I understand it was around 12 feet!! _________________ Common sense ISN'T! |

I do not set out catfish lines in the Mission River after it warms up. The alligators and alligator gar will eat or bite everything you catch if the lines are not run continuously. Over the years I have caught and released at least a dozen alligators on my jug and limb lines. I also accidently hit one in the head with my prop one day running up the river to set out lines. When I was headed back to the ramp he was on the bank. When I went by he slowly entered the water and swam on the surface toward my wake. I thought this was very strange because every gator in the past would quickly hit the water and disappear as soon as you ran by. I stopped and slowly idled right up to the gator. I know it is against the law to attempt to catch or harass any alligator unless you are a land owner with a permit during open season, so my story will stop here. |

| I saw something that sure looked like a gator in the last channel to the right off of the ICW before CC bay that goes back to kate's hole about 4 weeks ago. as i got closer it went down and when i came back it wasn't there. I would say it was a gator. we have one in our pond at the ranch. |
