:)Hey--I might get lucky-ya never know!!
Do some of you have any King/Ling--catching tips that you would be willing to share--
There may be a few of us out here, that would love to learn some of the basics.

(the one we do not mention had some tips-but is not here anymore-and I ran out of .223!!)

Like leader type, material, length, and preferred bait--also trolling speed, presentation---
you get the idea, thanks Rocky Cool

oh boy. heres what ive found out at the rigs for ling, when they are hungry they will eat almost anything. ive caught them on spoons, diamond jigs, and bucktail jigs. running 20lb braid straight to the lure with a tiny rod/reel set up.. so much fun. i take it your talking about being shore bound so that really wont help ya to much

The king fish leaders work pretty good with ribbon fish. I have also had luck with russel lures in gold and silver. You can get those leaders at walmart for cheap.

When I worked the rigs offshore, we would take one gallon jugs and fill them 1/2 with water. Then we would bounce them on the waters surface to make a lot of commotion. Lings would come to the surface and we would drop a hook baited with scraps from the galley and they would bite. It actually worked quite well.

with that said. i sight cast for ling. its the only time ive been able to catch them. ive gone out 1 day and caught ling and hit the same spot the next day and they wouldnt touch anything.

now i dont buy leaders, i make my own. all my rods have swivels, so attaching a piece of leader is actually pretty quick. ill normally start off with about an 18" leader and when i cut it off ill keep using it until i get to about 6" or so before i use a new piece. i like the sawproof in 50ish lb range. harbor freight scissors are nice cus they are 1$ on sale and will cut the leader no problem. i like to keep 2 pairs with me. and at 1$ they are pretty much disposable. now if you go with swivels go with black. weve had problems with stuff hitting the swivel and breaking the line. this year im trying out the clear swivels. so ill report how those work.

for kings, anything shiny with about a 6" leader or more. drifting ribbon fish is quite effective. make sure your reels have plenty of line because they will run and do it quick. the smaller ones will strip line like crazy. im a big fan of light tackle. all my rod/reels can be used inshore and offshore.

the preferred troll speed for kings is anywhere from 5knots-12knots. with all that mentioned, anywhere in the south you can fish applies. i grew up in florida and besides the ribbon fish, every thing applies there as well. another thing, if your trolling prerigged ballyhoo or know someone who does, the ballyhoo rig is the same thing as a king rig just without the trebble stinger. but unless your in blue water i wouldnt even wast your time with ballyhoo

Ling will take just anything that moves. I'd even caught them on spec rigs jigged around the near rigs. Finding them is harder than catching them.
Easiest Ling I ever hooked I caught by dangling a gold spoon over the side of the boat while I tried to clear a birds nest.

Kings like things that make a lot of noise or are flashy. My go-to for Kings is a chrome/pink rattle trap or a 2oz Hopkins spoon. I never use bait.

I've found that Kings have a "sweet spot" for prey. Anything over 6" length wise in a lure won't get you the same results a smaller lure will. My "King box" is full of spoons and rattletraps plus a couple of mylar skirted tuna plugs. All have had the trebles replaced with single hooks.

I like brown wire for a leader, but have used 125lb mono in the past. It really depends on which the lure works better with.

As I am new to offshore fishing as is Rocky any exp offshore fisherman that would like to come along would be welcome. More than enough room for 3 on boat.

The only time I went to the nearby rigs the tide was ripping by pretty good. We tied of to the rig and I threw a strikeking jointed lure out the back of the boat and let it do its thing. Ling blasted it. That was fun.

Menhadden or blue runners for me. Don't own a boat but from the pier
I use 105# toothproof wire with#4 VMC trebles and 80# spro swivels.
It handles Jacks , Kings ,And Tarpon. And I had really good luck with the Kings on big skipjacks last year as well.

CK you also caught a big ling on that tackle last year. I have been using the same rigs and it has worked very well for me from the pier and at the near rigs.

keep a pole and a live crab ready to bait and chunk when a ling comes up.
they can be finiky, but they do love crab.

1st--thanks for ALL the tips--from ALL!!
how long do you make leaders, how do you twist the eyes, (trick tools) to build--I know that the wire will poke the tar out of you--
I will U-tube it, maybe watch someone build one!!
thanks, Rocky
