I've heard about this place and know it's roughly south of Rocky Slough about where the Land Cut begins. Problem is, I've never seen any sign of the actual structure. Does anyone know if there is anything recognizable left of the old house that can be seen from the water?

I picked up a copy of Fishes of the Texas Laguna Madre by David McKee. It is advertised on the front page of this site. To my surprise, the first fifty pages hold histories and wonderful facts that I haven't seen elsewhere. On page 37 the author describes the Summer House and how Sarita East spent time there. Sarita sure is a familiar name to these parts. The book is much more than what initially looks like a fish identification guide.

Sounds like I need to read that one for sure! Sorry, I know nothing of the house.

There is very little structure left to see. Twenty years ago you could see what was still standing of the fire place bricks but time and weather has taken most of that away. I understand back in the day this was the Kenedy's main fishing camp where they entertained guest.
Fishing still can be very good in the early spring wading fishing but over the past 15 years the waters have turned into a wade fishing parking lot.

I'm guessing "The Summer House" print by John Dearman has nothing to do with this structure?

Hey David, I don't remember seeing the print but I'm sure it does. Dearman did alot of prints about those areas.

I've never seen that picture before, I've been doing a search on the internet and can't find it, must be something special done for the cca.
Anyway, yes that would be the Summer House we speak of with respect.

There is a roof in the picture, nothing like that there now.
I was fishing there when there was a structure that was visible, to bad all these young guys are missing the legends of the past.

Thanks for the info. I've only seen a copy of that print once before and had forgotten it was done by Dearman. That is a cool print and the old pier is part of the story. I agree it is depicting the legendary Summer House and the fishing area known by the same name.

I suspected that there is no longer a landmark left like speckled.trout said. I tried to point out the house to a buddy and it didn't have much of an impact since I couldn't say for sure exactly where it used to be. If I could point to a specific rise and say look right there - then I think it would catch someone's attention. Dearman may have gotten it right by having the house on a higher, dare I say it, "bluff." I tried searching Google Earth and there are some roads that run near. Nothing that would help to identify it from the water.

When I was running down there in the eighties, this pic depicted pretty much what I saw, not much more than the roof...G
