|
|
Had a great day of fishing today 11/19/12 at the packery jetties, the mangroves were in full force this afternoon hitting dead and live shrimp. I caught alot of the usual 6in to 8in snaps , when all of a sudden i get a big tug close to the rocks....my first thoughts were big redfish.....then I reeled in this big fellow.....Holy crap ......24 1/2 inch mangrove!!!! my personal best!
Had to take some more pics when i got home.
Never imagened they got this big, probably will never catch one this big again but I will take it! Wifey is frying up tonight as i speak....yum Gottal love this time of year! So till next time fellas peace. _________________ "If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles" |

Thanks R. Arnold for the link, I think tbugosh is right there also know as Gray Snapper the record being 28 1/2 , 4inches shy crazy! didn't get to weigh it but it sure was heavy.
OneMoreCast, I couldn't ask for nicer conditions no seeweed and I saw some nice slot reds and black drum being landed. Thinking I might go back tomorrow as well. _________________ "If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles" |

I caught some big ones like that at the jetties at South Padre Island at Isla Blanca Park in October. Freelining finger mullet with a split shot up against the rocks works for the big ones.
And they put up an awesome fight.
Way to go! _________________

Way to go man, that is the biggest one I have seen from the mainland. There was another guy on here named Jeremy that frequented the inshore rigs in his 15'and speared what I believe was the state record via spear, but again that was out at the rigs and not on hook-n-line. That fish of yours though is sow! Enjoy the meals to come. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

That's a beauty!! Glad to see the brutes are back on the jetties, following the poor showing of the summer of last year.
So long as we don't get a hard freeze this winter, there ought to be MANY MANY more of that size on the rocks next summer. (And you have hit on the key to these guys, fish as close to the rocks as you can afford to lose gear ).
EDITED:
Not to hijack your post, but wanted to tag along an older picture from a couple of summers ago, when the larger mangroves were all over the jetties.
That's what I'm hoping to get back to next summer. (That's a 54-Q cooler that 20-some inches across, and that was one of my better days).
