|
Blue Runner? Cut or Whole?
Smack or Like (Head only)?
Cut SkipJack?
Croaker?
Pomp?
StingRay?
Whiting? Head, Half or Whole?
this will be very interesting .... i'm guessing half a smack will be amongst the top choices ...
My personal favorite - 8" mullet that was slit on both sides
( i am no authority on surf fishing and have only caught 2 sharks in my life - by accident probably) |

I don't shark fish, but just FYI spanish macks (and kings) are game fish and can't be used as bait. All of the others can.
I'm kind of curious if anyone down here uses bluefish for shark bait if they get them? People use them for bait for makos on the east coast. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

I have caught alot of sharks this time of year on bluefish. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| It depends alot on the time of year. Sheepshead in the winter can be killer, but as always the fresher the better. Put multiple rods with different baits out and let the fish tell you what they want. |

Hiya!,
First off, SMacks are gamefish as mentioned. I wish they weren't because sharkies follow them around so you know they must be good.
Baits for sharks....thats a topic that can cover a book in itself...
My baits I used depend on location, time of year, and target size of shark. To keep this short, I am gonna give info on the average size.
If skipjacks are around, thats usually my goto bait. I never use whiting in the summer months unless I float them off the bottom. Whiting is like candy to those 100# plus rays. Winter and spring, whiting are excellent baits. Bluefish is another good bait if you can get them.
I rarely use frozen baits, so I normally use what I can catch in the area I am fishing. _________________ FISH ON!!,

Thanks! Hit a speed bump in life, but hopefully I can slowly get back in the game. Still may be a while yet. My leg still needs to recover more. _________________ FISH ON!!,

It would be nice if you could use the left over fish cleanings for bait, like the heads, to minimize waste. However, proving to the warden they were leftovers from cleanings and not simply cut the head off the fish to use for bait would be difficult. Hence the "any part" of the gamefish comes into play. _________________ FISH ON!!,
