Hello,
Follow up from "Offshore Tactics" post
Went offshore yesterday morning about 8am and fished the short rigs 2-5 miles out for about 8 or so hours. The weather was nice and the winds were light, but it was still pretty bumpy out there.
The red snapper were out in full force of course. We caught one every other cast but being so close to the shore they didnt really have to much size, although a few kept. Good thing was everyone was having a blast catching them on inshore rods and reels.
We did catch one ling, it was a small guy about 2 feet or so. Caught it on the bottom with cut mullet or ribbon fish cant remember. It was my friends first ling so she was quite excited.
Had a chance at one Kingfish floating a ribbon fish off the back, but I fumbled the hook set and blew my only chance!
Only bad new was I bought one of those "buck tail" jigs didnt do anything for me...no hits. I think it could have been a bit to heavy, it was a red and white 4oz...maybe 2oz would have been the better buy...
All in All fun day didnt see a boat out there until we came it. On a side note, as soon as I made it home a buddy called me and asked me if I wanted to go fish the bay...I said what the hell and we ended up finding a school of black drum. Blessed to be able to fish from sun up to sun down =)
Good luck if you make it out there |

| Glad you got to go out. The 4oz will come in handy if there is ever any current and is needed about 85% of the time. A helpful tip on the kings is to not "set" the hook. Kings have a very soft mouth and a typical hook set will rip the hooks right out. Just lift the rod out of the holder and apply the drag when kings hit, don't ever set.... |
