The surf can be a great way to put someone fresh to the sport on fish that can be kept for the table (whiting). Walking out to cast a little further can be an intro to wading. If the bite is a bust, you're still at the beach!
The pic-a-nic can be good for brownie points.

Looks like I will be heading to the surf this weekend. Swellinfo gave good reports for Friday and Saturday. Surf should be almost flat. That should make it easy for my wife to get her feet wet. She is just afraid she will loose her footing and fall over. She doesn't like it when the ground shifts under her feet and she doesn't have the best balance. I will take my cast net to get some live bait and some dead shrimp.

I wouldn't dare touch her fishing pole. I like to keep my hands from being broke. That is her's alone. She likes to bait her hook and everything. The only thing she will let me do is take the fish off the line. She hasn't quite got over holding a live fish yet.

I will load up our vehicle and head to the beach IF circumstances allow. You never know what will pop up in our family.

If you get a night off the old pier at the end of ennis joslin is open. I've been going there the past few days and have always caught fish either on jigs gulps or shrimp. Never been in the day but the light at night are killer.

Be glad she likes to fish!! Take it easy with her and be patient when showing her the ropes and you will mold a wife every guy here would give their upper plate for!! Just takes time.
My husband, on the other hand, will fish only if the fish are practically jumping out of the water to bite his hook...otherwise it's football or NASCAR.

It is the Oso Bay Pier. No it is not free and it is on Ocean Dr. almost at the intersection of Ennis Joslin and Ocean Dr. going to the college. You can't miss it. If you get to the college turn around and you will see it when driving back to Ennis Joslin. Go to Google Earth and it shows up on the satelite image. It has been there a long time. I heard it has been renavated just recently so it should be in good shape. They Have a Facebook page. I think it is only open at nights. No word on if it is open during the day. There is a thread on here about it that was posted a couple weeks ago.

Took the wife fishing South of Bob Hall. Caught plenty of whiting in the surf. A few huge hits but they pulled the hook right out of their mouth. Don't know what it was but it hit hard. Need to sharpen my hooks I guess. Loaded up around noon and went to have lunch on the island. Decided to stop at thte Packery Channel bridge before we headed home. Cast a few time and lost some bait. Cast again and a 17" trout hit my shrimp on bottom. Wife had to go the the bathroom so I took her. By the time I got back I had lost my parking space and people were everywhere. DAMN...should have made her go in the bushes. Anyway, got some fillets for the freezer. Gonna eat good this weekend. My wife is definately hooked now.

I agree with the others. I fish mainly the surf and whiting are almost always ready to bite. Fun to fight on light tackle when you can use it. I wade out and cast to the first or second gut and set the rod in a rod holder for my wife. she doesn't have to get wet. If on the north end you can easily wade through the wade gut and cast from there. Work your way up and down the beach till you find them. They love 1/2 shrimp and fish bites. Good fishing to both of you.

if she'll get into the wade gut and cast a shrimp under a popping cork she may get a nice spanish mackeral... really fun!
