And bottom line one fish won't hurt the population. There's hundreds of thousands of fish die every year I'm sure from nets, long lines, commercial fishing etc etc! Why take the effort to hammer a guy for trying to release a once in a lifetime fish?? Really!
My idea behind it is when you give me the thousands and thousands of dollars I spend a year on fishing alone then I'll fish by your guidelines! I obey the law support conservation don't waste and always try to revive. So what am I doing wrong then if I choose to catch a fish ad let it go and doesn't survive??
I'm positive everyone here has thrown a fish back to die whether it be a tarpon or a hardhead still a fish so shame on all of us!
Guess we should hammer all the guys for killing live bait to do nothing but catch the fish we so love to eat or release. Hmm. _________________ Hey man they ain't bitin!! Well "Grab a beer!" |

i have a friend that only fishes 25pound test mono on the pier..it is possible to land nice kings on it, you WILL loose some though, that pier has 5-6foot kings
let them run and fight them slow when they are way out there, get them tired before bringing them to the pier..
a 20-30# test top shot or mainline is very different than a section of 30pound test in your leader.. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Shark456Bait/featured

i understand what your saying however Texas is a completely different fishery than Florida.. |
I've landed kingfish 48" plus sliding on BHP on 10# test mono....just saying.
Aaaaand have caught big tarpon in the 6' class using 40# mono with about 50 yards of 60# mono top shot. Never have got an accurate measurement because I always had my buddy break of the #7 wire leader by wrappin a towel around the 60# mono and jerking up on it. Reel of choice was a tld25 on a 7' fast action rod.
Even fought one for 1hr 15min, before she took me under the pier and broke me off. Best fight ever.....it can be done. |

sorry im not believing the 10pound test on a slide line till i see it..the first hit would break it..i use 8pound test for a slide clip they break it with ease..
feel free to try to land them on super light line, i will be the guy shaking my head when you break em off..just saying..
and yah 40pound mono is incredibly strong, i caught that monster bullshark from the yak on 40pound mono i have caught tuna and marlin on it too.. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Shark456Bait/featured

There will be break offs, but it can and has been done. Drag has to be set right in order not to break off at slide. Oh and I did forget to mention there is about 30yds of 20# top shot on my 10# test gear, no matter what I'm fishing for.
For me it's all about the fun of the fight with light line, im just saying it can be done.
Great catch btw, sorry about the end result. |

If your gonna specifacly target a certain species there are gonna be fish that just dont make it! I do everything i can to release my sharks as quikly as possible, on ocassions we will lose one....sucks....but it is what it is. If losing a fish is gonna bother ya.....take up badmitten!
Just my .02.....although light tackle/big fish might be fun.....its not good for a fish that you intend on releasing!
I dont always use tarpon for bait, but when i do......
I prefer to use one that somebody else killed |

Tough thread!!!
The tarpon caught was a beautiful fish. Too bad it didn't survive, but it sounds like he did everything he could, and he wasn't targeting tarpon.
I would love to catch one that size!!!!! _________________ Ray |

Off the piers in Florida we rarely use anything larger than 12 pound mono... Let the fish tire while hes out there and youll usually be fine. |

| If you spend as much time and money fishing the peir as David and myself for kings, and a huge Tarpon hits your bait you aint gonna break it off. Truth be known that's the third tarpon over 5 foot that has been landed off BHP in the past 3 weeks. |

Dave pays the damn taxes on that pier in a months time most months of the year.
He wasn't targeting the tarpon he goes after kings.
The "just sayin" thing when dudes use it is without a doubt one of the gheyest things ever. It makes me think of a chick and how she just has to get that last word in there in a verbal altercation or just prove her point.
There are definitely some serious db comments on here judging Dave for doing nothing more than going fishing really. Crap happens fish and animals die. How many of y'all have hooked a schoolie trout in the gills or gut that didn't make it? Get off his nuts already.
Hell even the comments about the jackov cutting the fish up on the beach. Who the hell cares. Apparently they suck to eat and no telling if it was the same fish and how long it had been dead. Hey it didn't go completely to waste. Just for the sake of being fair some of you might need to take a step back on this guy too because you might be standing on his shaft.
Just to keep this going lets move on to the whole gay marriage and Chic Fil A thing why don't we. LOL |

As far as him specificly targeting tarpon......my bad if he wasnt I just asumed that someone that was slide lineing a 4/0 wide with 100 lb power pro wasent out there to fish for kings!
Reguardless what the details are....It was a great catch......just saying! |

| Great catch and release... sadly tarpon dont have the best release ratios so sometime they dont make it, but more do than dont. For the record the only thing p!ssing me off was the dude cutting it up on the beach.. as for the fisherman himself, keep on fishing! |
