I don't post many reports anymore since I'm so busy with work, family, school and fishing, but I have been down the beach alot this year, and have caught alot of SMALL trout in the 15-17" range. In May up north around Port A I was getting good trout in the typical surftrout range of 23-24", but PINS has been loaded with dinks, mostly dink males.

Any ideas? I know there is alot more fishing pressure than there has been in years past, and alot more people targeting trout. Could the big aggressive sow surf trout be being caught out or pushed out or South? Conditions have been excellent and numbers are easy to come by, I guess I gotta try somewhere else for the quality.

There has been a lot of male surf trout being caught this year hence the smaller size. I don't know where the bigger females are. Hopefully they have already made it out and spawned as were already seeing young of the year sea trout.

YES! Of the three times I have gone they have all been small, about two to one females.

Same thing at South Padre yesterday though Rob had a couple of good ones he missed and I had a nice trout roll on my He Dog.

I haven't landed any 30 inch plus fish this year, but after 12 or so trips since March, I can tell you there were some pretty big fish out on Mustang. I say "were" , because we kept 'em. One trip I personally caught 15 fish over 20 inches in a two day period, but that was right at the start of croaker season.
As the summer has heated up, I'm having to move a lot more, but there are still fish to be had.

Yes there were big ones north, now a lot of small males there too. It's very uncharacteristic, something moved the bigger fish, I haven't fished south of 40mm or north of access rd 1 in port A, but have caught a lot of turds and a couple nice ones in between since may.

Went to St. Joe last Wednesday. Tried the holes I thought I knew. Even went to the end. Nada. Nice happy shrimp, lures, the kitchen sink.. figured I would find them in the surf close in facing north. I did. Smallest males I have ever seen in the surf. A multitude of them. Strange. Went to single hook lures. They were all super aggressive. They were all super small. Strange not knowing why.

The croaker soakers have caught/killed all the big girls. All we're left with are the little guys. Very Happy

I'm sure that has an effect. I have noticed the males are either stupider or more aggressive, maybe both, they can't turn down a red/white skitterwalk. That's cool, but when they ski in because they are small, that's not.

Who knows? Redtide, mass influx of fisherman over the past few years, drought, could be a number of things.

I commented to Billy about that last week on our trip down PINS. I was thinking red tide may have a lot to do with it. Also we recalled that it was rare to get an undersized trout in the surf. I did remember about 8 years ago my wife and I got into the dinks around the ten mile mark. I must have caught 30 on 51m mirrolures.

In May I was slaying the big momma trout.. This happens every year if I remember correctly, and I bet Capt. Sandifer could concur.. Later in the summer, the trout size lessens in the surf.. By mid-June and July those big girls are out to sea or back up in the bays.. IE, all of the big girls being caught in the Oso and CC Bay recently, and I am sure way down south.. Last year around this time, I was still catching trout, but more reds found their way into the box, and I never thought why I wasn't catching anymore big trout, cuz I was happy with the fight and the box.. I do about 90percent of my fishing in the surf and jetty, I live like 400 yards away from it, and this is just my "hypothesis" of where they might be.. NO to the "overfishing" of them in the surf, and yes that they just moved on.. And I think this happens every year, at least in recent years..

Anything Red and White for that matter. I put freelined kickbutt live hopping shrimp in front, not much interest. Crazy retrieve Red and White, all over it.

Can't say I've noticed that. Until a few years ago we were hammering big fish year round on the beach.

Two words - "Capt" and the other rhymes with "Fate" Smile

I've always preferred June and July for numbers and size. This started last year with the dinks and is worse this year, something's going on
