Does braided line decrease your casting distance?
While fishing for reds here in san antonio i had a knot crap out on me with my reel so i quickly grabbed one of my cousins spare reels. I always use braided but after casting with his mono i noticed my lures going 25%-50% further.
My reel was a penn ssg 440 w/ 30# power pro braid
My cousins reel was a peen sargus 4000 w/ red cajun 12# mono |

use lighter braid..i use 10 and 15pound braid in the bay
that 10pound braid casts a mile...
i am using 40pound braid in my yak offshore..it is almost too strong..
i hate that red cajun stuff..it doesn't hold knots very well..hopefully they have improved it since the last time i used it.. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Shark456Bait/featured

usually it's the other way around...
i use 20# power pro in all of my curados, i can cast a country mile with them, plastics i use 1/16oz jig heads too...
try to spool up with 20 or even 10 and see how it goes from there... _________________ Trophy whitetail and exotic hunts on some of the finest ranches Texas has to offer, www.mcoutfitterstexas.com

You could also try a rod with large guides. I have a light Pflueger Arbor rod that casts great with braid from 20 - 30 lb. _________________ JJ |

speaking of braid. How often should it be changed out? Does it last longer than Mono? _________________ I like fishies |

I think that it just depends on the amount of use. If you fished everyday, you'd probably need to change out more often than if you fished weekends. _________________ JJ |

Don't toss the braid, just reverse it on the reel and use the fresh end.
My max on braid for casting is 20lb. Heavier line does shorten your casting without a doubt.
Now, I'll spool the offshore rods with 50, but that's strictly trolling and jigging. |

try out FINS windtamer. Cast smooth and a bit further IMO. I think it starts out at 15#. I usually use 10# with a 20# shock leader. Good luck. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

20 lb braid has the same diameter as 6 lb mono(each braid manufacturer differs slightly). For reference 50lb power pro has the same diameter as 12 lb mono. The smaller the diameter the better for casting distance...less resistance.
Right now I am having a huge debate on using braid. It just plain wears out your rods and reels. After I switched all my rigs to braid including spinning stuff for kids and wife it seems like every other trip I lose an eye insert or tip comes off. It is very hard on rods and reels
On changing braid I fish with the same braid now for 3 years. Faded and looks old but strong like bull. I like the idea of reversing it and will try it. _________________ Wish I Were in Baffin |

x 2 on the fins windtamer! best braid there is in my opinion. It doesnt get as many wind knots as power pro or suffix _________________ just sayin |

| I'm thinking about getting a spinning reel for BTB fishing and fishing the riggs. Im not sure what size reel I need to handle those Kings and Lings. I was thinking about a Penn Battle 4000 or 5000 series. And what pound braid. any recommendation would be apprecated |

| Yep, what SB said, or a penn 5500 or 6500. Both the pens and fin nors are hearty reels that take the abuse of salt/sand/big fish/you name it. The fin nor have a much better drag system though. |

You said nothing about the condition or tune of the borrowed reel. That makes a HUGE difference!!!!
As to guide/tip wear and so forth, I've been using braid ever since Spider Wire came out decades ago and have yet to have any of these issues. It's possible that way too much drag (too high) is shock loading the tip and/or rings on hook sets. You MUST use less drag tension with braid than mono for an equivalent rig if you want to minimize many problems, and a rod with a slightly softer action helps too. _________________ Dave
