If I use live bait and want anything biting(reds, trout, small sharks, etc) would you use wire leader and a spider weight and cast out in second gut?

I would go with the good old Carolina rig with a thin wire leader or 20-30lb leader line! As far as positioning, that all depends in where the fish are Very Happy

Look for "trout holes", or pools of water that seems to lack waves near the first gut.. Wade out, and freeline.. Best Way! On rougher days, or if the bite is truly on the bottom, use a carolina rig.. Don't EVER use wire.. I mean, you can.. But, you'll catch a hundred times more fish using a mono leader.. That wire is seen from a mile away, and it doesn't present the bait naturally in the water.. You can recognize a rookie, if he's using wire fishing for trout or reds or most inshore species.. Some people just don't listen and are content in going home with maybe one or two fish, if that.. People in the know, want to maximize they're catching ability with the small amount of time that they are able to get off and go fishing.. Just think NATURAL.. Natural presentation.. And very natural LIVE baits..

I agree with Murf to an extent. The only time I use wire is for targeting smacks, kings, and sharks, or toothy critters. I use mono all the time in the surf for everything else.when I started, I used wire and caught only whiting. I switched to mono and still caught mainly whiting, but with the occasional red, trout, pomp, etc. Fish are smarter than they look...

Two weekends ago I caught 5 reds over 25 in(largest 29 in) and several specks (largest 25 in) all in the first gut and all using a fish finder rig with a 40lb flourocarbon mono leader. This was at mile marker 28 down PINS. Here's a pic of the type of leader:

I like how the weight (I use a triangle/pyramid weight) can dig in to the sand, then the line can feed through it. I was using live finger mullet I caught with the cast net, then switched to live croaker when those ran out.

I use 40# test leader material rigged carolina style. Just adjust the size weight to the current and wind speed.
If you free-line, beware of the birds. Birds are really the only reason I'd use a weight, at least when the conditions are great. Down south the birds leave me alone. They are trained on Mustang Island...
