Been a while since I posted a report, but I will keep this one to the nuts and bolts.

We fished the upper laguna and nighthawk from 7am to 9:30. Redfish were everywhere shallow and along steep drop-offs, often in amongst pods of pony/horse mullet. Many of them were tailing hard and deep in thick, healthy seagrass. I hooked up with 4 reds, biggest 26", and two trout. Skipjacks were out as well and my buddy caught a flounder on a gulp. Numerous black drum were out too, puppy sized, and have been out for the past week or so. If you have a sack of dead shrimp and fish bites you should hook up. All reds were caught on artificials - two were sight casted, two were "blind" casting but fishing drop-offs that had lots of bait.

My buddy was hooking up on white gulp shrimp, and I was using an obnoxiously bright limetreuse paddle tail on an 1/8 ounce jig head - good vibration and a color you can't miss. Water color still looked poopoo, but there was actually some healthy looking grass beds that both in nighthawk and elsewhere that made for some nice contrast in color. Good to know that the BT has not prevented the growth of the grass so far.

Sorry no pics. We didn't target trout much, as conditions were calm and we wanted to take advantage of sight casting while it lasted. Red fish tacos for dinner, ceviche for lunch tomorrow. FYI, redfish bellies were full of shrimp and crabs - no mullet or pinfish or anything. Tight lines.

Off topic, Itorna1, but had dinner the other night in San Antonio with icthyologist/systematics guru Ed Wiley. He is now Professor Emeritus from University of Kansas. By the way, nice report.

Mr. Pool, very cool - Dr. Wiley was always one of the ichthyologists I looked up to. He helped put Kansas on the map in terms of evolutionary biology. I will never forget him sitting in the front row of a room full of +/- 300 ichthyologists when I gave my first talk as an undergrad at a meeting - I was 20, pretty nervous, and he grilled me pretty good Very Happy

Going out tomorrow again, early, while the wind lays down to try and get a few more reds. Hopefully the morning-after-the-big-moon factor won't slow the bite down, and maybe I'll get to make another batch of my ceviche:
