I have fished Deadmans a few times years ago but from driving in and wading. Can anyone give me some pointers on accessing Deadmans by boat. I have the right equipment to get in there by boat but, don't want to get caught up in a bad situation. Is there more than one access and what is the best route in? Does anyone have any pictures or maps or pointers that I can navigate my way in without hitting something or tearing up the boat? One other question, can it get too shallow to get in or out with low tides? Thanks for any help or replies. Wanting to take the bride for a ride and see if we can catch a few but not wanting to throw her out of the boat just yet. LOL

Gut that runs between the spoil islands just S of the powerlines best way in.
Follow the markers to the end and hang a left. Shallow grass beds so stay near the markers.
Id be real careful on a low tide depending on what type of boat your running.

Thanks Bluffer, boat can run pretty shallow. May give it a try next week on my days off. Hopefully the water will be a little less churned up with the winds with the protected areas.

I was really wanting to take that run last time I had my boat down there, but discretion kept me out.............................. and unstuck! I've always wondered about the pipes marking channels down there, as in which side (if any) and how close one must stay to them to be relatively safe?

Stay to the right of the markers going in, but keep close to them. You will be running at a diagonal under the power-lines. At the end you will see an island to the right and a orange cone on top of a marker, if it is still there. Make a semi wide left turn and head back NW a little ways. You will see the big duck blind.

Howdy. If you come in from the ICW, which i imagine you will be, that channel that the previous posts are referring to is 1.15 miles north of the JFK. The channel is only 25 yards wide at that entry and very shallow on either side. Once in, it is pretty easy to keep lined up (just south) of the markers. As of last weekend, the orange cones are still up on the last 2 markers before you get to the holes. I would not cut that corner on the left turn into the holes as there is a sand/shell bank that is really shallow. Google Earth shows all these details well. Also, if you have the chance to run in there in the afternoon when the sun is at your back, the channel is very easy to see with some polarized glasses. As a great fisherman once told me, 'you only learn it by doing it'.

I run a 22 ft Keywest V with a pocket tunnel back there just hug those PVC pipes and you will be fine. A few feet either way and you might be in trouble.

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm gonna see if I can fish it next week. Hopefully the wind and weather will hold up. Thanks again

That last sentence says it all. I've seen many posts over the last few years since I joined that warned people to NOT do this and not do that............ basically saying to just stay the heck out of Baffin Bay, Dead Man's, Packery Channel, etc. That's crazy stuff to me, one only learns something from DOING it and anything that's REALLY worth doing is never easy or without some risk, sometimes a lot of risk!!!!! Wink The rewards and the lessons learned are some of the greatest moments in life, and I would submit that they make life worth living!

Was that "channel" ever really dredged by anything or is it just a slightly deeper run made from years of boats using the same course, then adding poles to mark?

Get a kayak; then, you really won't have to worry about the channel. Your fuel expenses will be very cheap. You will run shallow, sneak up on fish, and you will have a blast.

Not really sure, I was fishing that area in a jonboat with a 3hp motor back in the early 70's, the channel was there then. IIRC there used to be a standpipe or two back there, maybe an old oil barge channel? There used to be old building foundations too. Maybe something left over from the cannery days.

Is it hard packed ground right in there? I have a small 16' Jon boat I don't mind taking in because if I get hung up I can just jump off and push out. If its not hard packed ground it'll be a real nightmare trying to push off if your legs are sunk in two feet of mud.
