Nobody's arguing the point about stingrays, that speaks for itself! The subject was jellyfish stings and somehow the asp got drug into this...........

It all leaves me wondering on whether it's possible to get a "partial" or low percentage asp sting as it easily is with any jellyfish or similar critter. An asp has a very small surface area when we're speaking of the area that does the damage. Something like a man o war has an unreal amount of tentacle length and potential stinging power. Having a short section of tentacle rub by you or even having one wrap around you is bad enough, but not the "bells and whistles" event that it easily can be, and what I'm speaking of here. I would wager from my own experience that 95% of jellyfish and/or man o war stings fall into this category (not the REAL thing!), so those involved have no real concept of what I'm talking about when it comes to pain and agony......................

Some people are more sensative then others to certain toxics/venom.

Case in point. Many years ago while vacationing in the Florida Keys the wife and I did a little kayaking. We had to sludge through some very nasty looking seaweed to get to deeper water. We had on booties but the seaweed sludge was about knee deep at points. She followed the path I was cutting. We had to do the same sludge march to get the yak back on on shore.

Once on land the wife immediataly starts itching. Thought it might be Mesquitos. Nope, not Mesquitos. Over the next 3 hours. Swelling then Cramps. She goes down in a fetal position moaning in extreame pain from the cramps.

An ambulance run to Fishermans Hospital on Marathon Key, and several IV/Benadryl solutions and 6 hours later she was released. The Cramps were gone but she kind of resembled the Michelin Man from the swelling, which lasted a couple of days.

The Culprit to this vacation runier.....

Of course, that goes without saying when some folks can go into shock and/or die quickly just from touching a peanut to their lips, etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked And that's not even a toxin or venom, just an allergen!!!! Rolling Eyes Embarassed Crying or Very sad

by the way Ugly Tuna you are absolutley correct with the tape on asp stings. It was what finally helped. Before that my leg was freakishly cold to the touch and would shake like a chihuahua afte a cold bath. As far as man O War stings I dont think I have ever gotten hit by one. And by reading some of these stories I think I will do my best to avoid it too. Not sure about sporting some pantyhose though...lol

Schmidt Sting Pain Index

This is a very interesting read.

http://www.arkinspace.com/2011/08/schmidt-sting-pain-index-how-much-could.html

No Asp description here but, pay attention to his description of the pain levels. It's just funny, well in a masochistic sort of way.

Maybe we can start one for sea and water born creatures.

"The Man o War sting is like being whipped by 2 people at once, each using a cat of nine tails while a 3rd person douses the whipped area with boiling tar pitch." Laughing
