Prof. Salt

Three of us launched from Mayan Princess to go to my usual rigs, and the early surf looked good from the beach, but ugly from the yak. Poor He who shall not be mentioned caught one wave and almost got rolled backwards on the way out! Blowrey (our newb) did an admirable job getting through the tough surf. The paddle out was easy, but there was a LOT of weed.

At the first rig, I tied up and had Blowrey tie to my yak while He who shall not be mentioned anchored nearby. I somehow had the combination that the snapper wanted, and knocked out a limit pretty quickly.

While catching snappers, had a line out the back, and got a nice King on it.

Soon I got a good fish on the "outback" line, and I unhooked to go for a one hour sleigh ride. I ended up about a mile from the rig, but leadered my first good kayak shark, a 6ft Blacktip!

I caught 4 Jack Crevalle, but none was bigger than 33"

We all worked out to the farther rigs, and we didn't locate any snappers, but there was less weed as we went out. At the Wally rig (Wal-Mart on stilts), He who shall not be mentioned didn't realize that the convenient place to tie up was also the crewboat delivery spot. They showed up and were less than cordial, nearly backing over him as he tried to clear lines and get out of the way. Luckily he was not hurt. Actually, being forced to move got him trying to catch Kingfish, and he got into them very effectively. When He who shall not be mentioned was fighting his first King, I saw a thick fish leap really high out of the water... like over 20ft high! I didn't know Kings could get that high out of the water, and it was really impressive to see. I was working the same area and hooked up to what I thought was a big Ling, but it turned out to be another Blacktip. This one was a nice 5-footer. You can see in the photo that he was hooked in the pectoral fin, and it made the fight more difficult.

Wednesday if the weather is still nice, I will try to do it all over again...

...and I got some points for Team Nightstalkerz in Kayak Wars!

Where do you guys stow your catch while out on the water?

I have a 48qt cooler in the tankwell, a folding coldbag under the deck, and a big insulated fishbag on the bow. I can hold a lot of fish on my oversized kayak!

I can not imagine paddling out there and playing with sharks from a yak!

I don't do drugs, don't even drink, and try to keep my language suitable for all audiences. I do have a vice, though - kayaking out in the blue. If you try it, be warned: it's addictive.

Its a whole different world out there, and the water is fantastic. I have not tried the rigs my the mayan princess I usually have gone down the pins. May have to try it out there one of these days. Nice catch and pics. Very Happy

Thanks Rabbit, I like that set of rigs because it's kind of a long ride for powerboats from Packery or Port A. That leaves us undisturbed for the most part. The rig set is no better than others for fishing, but we can get to them easily and have a few choices of structures.

I don't mind sharing with PBs but if I can find a quiet place to catch 'em it's better. Very Happy

Prof.Salt what video editing program did you use? i have been looking at editing for a while, but haven't found an easy program..really want to see some of that scrappy shark slowed down...he gets really close a few times...

It's not very good, but allows me to cut and paste it together relatively well... and the price is right!
