I suggest running the mono on bottom of the spool and your braid on top if fishing from a pier or Jetty. The mono frays and breaks real easy on the pilings and rocks. I have lost a few kinfs running 30lb mono....but no breakoffs with my 65 and 100lb braid. _________________ D. Askew |

i chipped a tooth breaking 65pound braid off after a king went through the pier..
this year when the tarpon are there like crazy(last year i saw over 60 in one day, and i saw one around 200 pounds eat a float doing acrobatics..) im gunna hand out in the yak just out of casting reach from the pier...gunna try live pinfish, piggy perch, crab and anything else i can get my hands on...i think it will be easier to hook and land one from the yak than from the pier... _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Shark456Bait/featured

If you hook a 200 # Tarpon out of the yak call me on my cell and I'll dispatch a offshore boat to retreive you and your yak. |

Ok I am very inexperienced with braided line would it be like running a fly rig with the dacron backing and mono tip and with my 950 ss what size braid would be good to run on it I know it can take 20-40 lb mono I'm not to sure on braided line I know I wont run anything less then 20 most ill run is 40 just for the pure and simple fact is I like a challenge _________________ Lord I can't change

| My set up consist of a Penn 6/0 wide with about 300 yards of 30 # mono on the spool and 100 # power pro on top.The portion that I tie to the swivel is tied with an offshore knot and doubled back towards the reel around 15 to 20 feet. This gives me an added edge if the fish is green when around the pillings. 6 foot #9 toothproof wire for my rig with #4 6x VMC for the bait and #6 for a stinger. My method may vary from alot of people here as I have fished the Carolina Coast all my life but it works for me. All the braid isreally for the line capacity moreso than the strenth of the line. A more common cenerio would be to run your mono and put a 100 yard braid top shot. I'm not really worried about the sand bars wearing on my braid fishing from the pier, not in contact with it unless you have to try and beach one of those big Tapon. |

jonofre,
Your Penn 9500 is Plenty for kings and tarpon off the pier. Yes you may encounter a monster 200+ tarpon one day and then it may be tested, but like you said, you like a challenge. IMO, A Penn 6/0 Wide is too big for tarpon and especially kings. I run Penn 7500 and 8500's off the pier with 20 pound Ande Backcountry line, and have landed tarpon up to 160 and kings to 30. Im like you, I like the challenge of light tackle, and as long as you play your drag right and appropriate your 9500 is good for 99% of tarpon and kings you will come in contact with. Sharks are another thing...

I have had the pleasure of tackling a tarpon out of my yak. Easy 125lbs and he towed me nearly a mile up and down the beach. Getting ready for the money shot and the line looped around the tip...well you know the rest. However I have 6 days in Orange Beach Alabama scheduled in June and I will be launching off the beach most every morning in search of another! Should be good this year as they are arriving early. Now if I can just keep those pesky Kings off my bait. _________________ Better tighten that drag boy, he's gonna spool ya! |

I have never used braid so no personal experience here. I've looked up various comparisons on the internet but get different stories. Some say mono has better abrasion resistance and others say braid.
For those who have used both mono and braid at some point (or still do), what have you noticed about their abrasion resistant qualities? In general, do you think one is better over the other? Thanks for the help.

About the only time I don't scream like a little girl after hooking a fish is when I'm alone...and even then sometimes I do. I love fishing so much I'd ditch the wife and marry it (fishing) if I could. But then it might start nagging me and we would fight...better to just keep shacking up on the side. |
