I have a horizontal hole drilled in mine that I put a 1" piece of PVC pipe into. I use the cross pipe to twist it back and forth to drive it into the sand.

It is a trick I learned from Hardhead several years ago. He totally fell off of the radar.

That's what Skipper does however I use Trash Heaps technique. The only places TH's technique will not work is at Matagorda and other really rocky and shelly spots. In some cases in the 50's on PINS. IN that case the t-posts fitted on the pvc works well.

Here are pix of my set up.

I cut a 45 degree angle on the bottom.

I then add a rubber connector. The neoprene is to hold my pliers or lip gripper so I don't have to search for them if needed.

Like stated earlier this helps with better suction as well as protecting rods. I personally do not want to carry any more stuff than I have to, e.g. shovels and mallets, so I find this works well for me.

What really gets it deep is if you wiggle it and suck on it at the same time. That can really be taken the wrong way!lol

after work last night when i read this its like i thought surf fisherman were a little different than most if u have to ask that question and cant figure out a way to set a rod holder u shouldn't be fishing down the beach .because if something goes wrong u wont be able to handle it.as for setting mine i beat em and never thought of another way,but i guesse i'm just too primitve of an outdoorsman to do it anyother way!!

the Idea with the tennis ball is a good Idea for 2.5" pipes... if you have 2" pipes.. cut the tennis ball in half and do the same thing... works really really good!.. also you wont get light headed lol

Beating them in works.. good but only for a little while... If you get a good hard hit on a rig, and the drag is set tight.. its gonna drop that PVC and pull your rig into the water.... seen it happen twice..
tennis balls are cheap you can find them free..
washers, nuts about .50
the all-thread is about as much as a 1 gallon gas coupon... ($4 or something)

Glad you said it so I wouldn't have to. That's the way I do it. A rubber mallet works ok too. Make sure and set them at a slight angle away from the surf.

Top Dog is exactly right. Been doing it this way for 20 plus years.
