|
|
First off, thanks for everyone's responses to my other thread. It is much appreciated, and I am really making an effort to become a better fisherman by trying new things.
I was wondering, can someone explain the difference (tackle wise) between a Carolina rig and a Fish Finder rig? Best I can google, err, tell, a carolina is a hook tied to a mono leader which is in turn tied to a barrel swivel that has either a bullet or an egg weight above it. How is this different than a fish finder? And it is my assumption that the carolina is meant to be worked along the bottom like a jig, whereas a fish finder is meant to be cast and left alone w/ natural bait. Is this correct?
Thanks,

| They're pretty much the same concept with the exception of a carolina rig using an egg weight and a FF rig usually has a swivel and weight clipped to it. I've used the Carolina rig for years bass fishing and its used to drag artificials on the bottom. However most I've seen that used it saltwater just strapped on something like a mullet and let it sit. |

| Good question. The one you describe is what i refer to as a fish finder rig. Not sure if its the same. Different images (google) show what i know bass fisherman use which is different than a fish finder rig but i dont know that set up name. I mainly use the Fish finder rigs when fishing for flounder but i will also use them in the surf at times doing the "walking the mullet techique" or soaking a live bait |

I use the Carolina for just about everything...I will pull a lure behind it....dead bait and let it sit....live shrimp on bottom....and this week I put some FishBite on it and let it sit....I catch fish using it in every way....I give the weight about 2 feet of travel it really lets me feel the fish and with live gives the shrimp some room to move around.... _________________

I'm gonna be casting it in the surf and off a jetty. What weight egg sinker do you figure I should use?
Was planning on casting/retrieving with fishbites and a cocahoe minnow, and then casting/letting sit with chunks of whatever cut bait I catch. _________________ Stupid things seem a lot smarter while you're doing them. |

Big Los, just think about the weight. On the Carolina rig, the weight is above the swivel and can move freely the entire length of your line. On the fish finder rig, the weight is below the swivel and is stopped by a crimped sleeve to keep it away from the hook. This limits its movement.
Good luck. _________________

| My 'carolina' method is for the flats would be a 3/8 oz egg weight with a split shot 18" up the line rather than a swivel. Its about enough weight to get the line tight and keep the bait in the same spot and feel for bites! And if you use mullet, catch your own fresh finger mullet and when you put it on the hook squish and get it real bloody. |

3/8 is about right....as for putting it on the line above the swivel i used to do that too but after a while it damaged the line and I lost a few fish. So now I use a 2 foot of heavy line for the egg to move on. so it would be swivel 2 foot 40# with egg, swivel 2 foot of 40# with hook. Have not lost a fish with this setup and it works as well as when I was just putting the egg on the line. _________________

Got it, thanks!
As far as the hook goes, if I were using a soft plastic shad, I would use an unweighted hook and not a jighead, correct? And would I "jig" it along the bottom as I retrieved? _________________ Stupid things seem a lot smarter while you're doing them. |

I use an un weighted hook but have used a really light jighead as well and I bounce it along the bottom some times let it sit for a sec then bounce it again it just depends on what the fish react to _________________
