Looks like I might get a chance to come back down later this month. Questions for you experts.

-What water is good in January (surf, channels, flats, ???)?
-Any fish runs in January that I should focus on?
-What are the temps down there in January (both air and water)?

Thanks

Fish will be deep. Trout, reds, flounder, and drum for the taking. Fish low and slow. Temperature is variable, but January and Febuary are our coldest months.

Ok. So will I need to fish from a boat or off a pier to get to deep water, or will channels and flats be productive?

The channels off the flats will be good. If it warms up during the day, fish will make their way out of the channels and onto the flats. This is a good place to intercept them.

Neat. Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can do with the few hours I have. Want to make the most of it.

I might have access to a kayak when I come, not sure yet.

After a couple days of COLD weather the canals at Padre Island often is great. I've caught a number of reds and trout on red/white clousers there fishing the drop off.

Thanks all for the great info. I'm very excited to come give it a go again. I've been fishing for back country browns and cutthroats lately, and am really looking forward to the change of pace. Picked up some new line for my 8 wt, and this will be the first time to try my new reel.

Just wish I had more time down your way is all.

Had a fun time while I was down there. I caught a bunch of whiting, and also caught an eel. Didn't acheive my goal of catching a black drum though. Maybe next time. Thanks for all the advise once again folks, and as I have said before, if you are ever planning a fly fishing trip out to Colorado, drop me a line. I'll be glad to offer any advise I can to make it a successful trip for you.
