I had heard that the cold winter chill chased most of the Mangroves South. Has anyone heard of them being caught around the ULM/Corpus area. Maybe even as far up as Port A / Rockport?? Conn Brown Harbor used to be a good place to find them. I wonder on the wreck of the SS Worthington??

I caught them in the Padre Island canals deep into the winter, but before the big freeze. We then caught a few in the spring too, so they appeared to survive the winter. Got them targeting trout in the lights at night. Maybe the guys that spear fish the jetties could tell you more about their abundance this year vs last.

The thing to remember about mangroves is that even IF they are around, they are very smart fish and quickly catch on to the average presentation. So, even if many aren't being caught, they can still be thick down there. The longer they live the smarter (much more line/leader/terminal tackle shy) they become.

I commented a couple of months back about finally getting into some at the Destin jetties, and that using a circle hook proved very vexing for this species, at least the days that I was there. The bite was so quick and light that having to react lightning fast and actually set the hook to connect was imperative, making circle hooks not the best choice. I wound up doing well on a super sharp Owner SSW Bait Hooks and small live pinfish.

I shot 5 this weekend at the Mansfield jetty. 2 had hooks in their mouth still. Didn't get lucky twice! Twisted Evil There are a lot down there and almost all were a good size. I shot one that was absolutely huge. There was a COLD water current running along the rocks on the channel side, North Mansfield, that had all the fish running in it. About 10 feet out from the rocks it was hot again and no fish. Stomachs say Shrimp is the key.

Hope that helps.

Hey, Foldcat , I Find them stacked up in the fall in Ingleside, look for structure. I guess since they have cleaned up the harbor those Mangroves took off. I have never fished the Jetties infront of the Corpus L heads, but David Sikes wrote an article in the Callertimes about that area and Ingleside. He may still have it archived.

Here is a good link to explain my way of thinking as regards to fishing.

They don't bite at the L heads. Especially not on live shrimp!
