So Trash Heap, how do you envision the process of moving the turtle program to Matagorda? how would they do it?

Good article.

Based on the current comments, it seems like folks are starting to come around to the fact that Donna Shaver, Joe Escoto, and the rest of that lot are trying to blatantly steal 60 miles of beach. Now we just need to figure out what to do about it.

In the mean time, I think maybe I will introduce polar bears or some other non-indigenous species to the area between the Packery channel and BHP and set up shop. That's all it takes to get your own private beach, right?

by boat if necessary, first thing is ship dOnNa there with only a turtle calling device to continue her program.
fot those who didn't get my dOnNa reference, it's Donna Shaver, turtle lady who thinks turtles rank higher than humans.
what a total waste of good money on a 1% of world turtle population activity.

great article. I think he is spot on. I was talking to my wife about these exact issues this morning as we took the kids to watch them release the sea turtles. They were talking about how critical it was to release the turtles on the beach instead of releasing them into the water.

the reason; so the turtles would come back to THAT beach... and not some other beach. They also mentioned that the survival rate was probably about 1% for the released turtles. I had to wonder... what IF they released them further past the surf... past the seagulls... past the area where it's so hard for them to swim. But then, it wouldn't be a guarantee that the turtles would come back to PINS.... seems a little selfish to me. Spend that much money, time and effort, and restrict the access of the public for a 1% survival rate? Perhaps if they released them in the open water, the survival rate might increase... and then the turtles would nest in different areas. Wow... it might make PINS not such a huge priority for the turtle gestapo.

They also mentioned what a dire effect humans had on the turtles, etc...etc.

sometimes it's like they forget that humans live here too.

Does anyone have the stats on the number of turtles that lay eggs on the beach vs the one in Mexico and their survival rates. I would lke to have some fun with math to show why this is a wast of money and time.

I would be interested too... but you see, we have "experts" here in texas. "experts" that depend on a job and their own personal bubble reagrding their own agendas, and it will be very unlikely for those experts to ever admit their work is pointless.

13,000 nests worldwide and 140 of them were from Texas

For the most detailed information available on Kemp's ridley worldwide turtle recovery statistics as well as its possible down listing to protected in 2015 go to -
http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/pdfs/recovery/turtle_kempsridley_draft2.pdf

or type in "2010 Draft Bi-National Recover Plan" in Google

Note that in determining whether to down list the turtle that the nesting population at the Park is not to be considered. Only the turtles nesting in Mexico.

If you haven't already........go to www.googlescholar.com and search for Donna Shaver. Her published articles will come up and you can check out her results. Her own publications seem to show this program as an exercise in futility. Also, few of the turtles now nesting on PINS were turtles released by the program at PINS.

First, continue to locate Texas ridley nests.

Second, remove all the Texas eggs and place them in insulated chests packed with sand from the beach on Matagorda Island.

Third, incubate the eggs at the existing PINS facilities for the time being, but release the hatchlings only at Matagorda Island. Any eggs collected from nests laid at Matagorda and most other Texas barrier beaches may in time either be incubated or left in situ on those beaches within protective mesh corrals, but no more corrals may be installed at PINS.

Fourth, over time, as the eggs become too numerous to incubate at the existing facilities, move the overflow and eventually the whole incubation operation to new facilities built at the old ranch HQ on Matagorda Island.
