i let the reel do it's job. fish with just enough drag to keep from stripping line, tighten as necessary when snagged or fish on. if snagged, point the rod tip straight at the snag and most free themselves.

all my reels have braid. and if I hardly ever touch it. If your reffering to using your thumb on the bait casters I have heard lots of people put a piece of rubber surgical tube hanging close to use. But personally I set up my bait casters to work with the brakes alone. But I hardly fish upwind either.

If your talking about fishing braid on an eggbeater, continue use until you grow the callus. Can't think of anything else. If using braid on extra large eggbeater, go with glove or tape your finger.

You can also use safety finger tape to protect your fingers from cuts. Grainger may have it locally or see this link:

http://www.amazon.com/BANTEX-COHESIVE-SAFETY-FINGER-GREEN/dp/B001B9OL6S

This type of tape is used in industry to protect your fingers from cuts and abrasions and is quite good. We used a lot of it in the Postal Service Maintenance Department.
