It happens.
Watch for large ships that are heavily loaded coming into the CC ship channel without tugs to slow it down. When the ship reaches a certain point the water in CC Bay will recede(most noticeable at CC Beach and around the bayfront breakwater). The current around the rocks is amazing-would definitely suck a person out. There will be a slight lull in water movement and then the water comes back as a wave-whipping around the breakwater and down CC beach from the ship channel outward.
You will not see a tanker-by the time water movement starts the ship should have entered the breakwater.
CC Bay on average is 10-13 ft. deep - CC ship channel is dredged 50-55 ft. deep. Put in a big ship pushing 30+ ft. of water at 10-15 knots for several miles and presto ! Waves of 2-3 ft. breaking in CC Bay !
Have always wanted to surf the wave that breaks out in front of the breakwater just southwest of the channel. All just a matter of timing.
8-10 ft.is probably being generous on the size of the Wake/Wave left by these large ships-but it is pretty weird to look up on a calm day in CC bay and see a BREAKING wave coming at you. Be alert-be safe.

Sorry about the wake...I drank too much beer and had to take a leak. It got away from me and hit the water.

I would say it was a tanker that had already entered the channel under the bridge before you crossed the causeway but the wave was still coming across the bay.

Watched a ship go by in the channel that runs alongside the Adolph Thomae park, amazing how higher the water level is in front of the ship compared to behind the ship.

is there a law that a larger boat must give way to a smaller one? I had a large deep sea boat pass me in the channel by Crab Man - it threw such a big wake that the 22ft Bluewave I was in sure was tossed around - pissed me off,,, the dude in the big boat didn't give a damn - my buddy wanted to whip his arse,,,,, I was thinking that maybe he had an emergency - it's hard to be that wreckless !!!
