Well I got off to a late start and was at the South Jetty by 10am. Others out there reported NOTHING being caught. Anyway, I headed for my favorite spot off the end and set up. I figured the water was fairly calm so I should slide-line a bait out for a jack (hopefully.) First bait got nailed but the fish didnt bite the hook. Confused I reeled in the mullet with no teeth marks but shaved scales behind the hook. Second bait got hit but this one was a Spanish mac. I caught 2 more macs on my smaller slide-line rig after that. The Bigger Slide rig sat out for about an hour with the live mullet just swimming in circles. It was a little slow for a while so I was just sitting back watching the bait swim around.

Out of no where a big king shoots out of the water with my bait in its mouth! This fish cleared the water about 4'. I quickly grabbed my rod and held on for that monster run! After a crazy 150yrd solid run it came in slowly. All I had to do was keep the preassure on. Finally it was close to the rocks but had me and the gaff man running back and forth avoiding us. The fish didnt get close to a flat rock for an easy landing. Instead it came up at the very end of the jetty around the steep, slippery rocks. This guy that I dont know at all went all the way down there to gaff the fish for me. That was a very nice thing he did for me, I never would have landed this fish without his help.

The King meassured at 46" and alot of pounds Cool My rig was a Shimano Tld10 spooled with 65# PowerPro on a 7' M Allstar.

Nice King. I've been grilling mine over charcoal using a pizza spice rub. HEB pizza spice. It sounds wierd but it tastes great on Kingfish. I mix it in a little olive oil and rub it on.

Great story. There always seems to be a few big kings hanging around out there. Here is one that I caught earlier this summer on one of Nick Meyers Breakaway Trout Roads, Daiwa BG-15 and 15 lb test. Nick was there and weighed it on his boga grip at 26 lbs. This one took me down to the last few wraps on the spool. One of 5 caught that day on a Mirrolure Catch 2000. Also cranked in 6 big spanish macks. One of my best days ever.... The water was calm enough to get down on the rocks and grab em by the tail. Released all but 2 spanish macks to fight again.....

It usually happens this way, I go out of town for three days and the fishing busts wide open! Thanks for the pictures. The next Saltwater Angler is going to press this week can I send in your photo?

Thanks!
