I wasn't saying that dead shrimp wasn't great for them, only asking if anyone had TRIED squid!?

I've fed MANY 100s of lbs of dead shrimp to trash fish while waiting for something decent to get to the bait. Squid lasts MUCH longer on the hook and might be a great drum bait if anybody gave it a fair shot.

Funny................................... that's what the offshore boats use for bait. Wink

Landlocked, I've tried squid and sea lice. Dead shrimp seems to attract Black Drum better and faster. Yes, dead shrimp will get eaten more and faster by skunk fish. But, it takes many trials and error to learn to know where to cast the bait so that it won't get robbed. Fishing main channels where there's lots of fish traffic will certainly get highway robberies by those pesky whiskered fish and sting rays. I like to cast where there's less of a current and near where the channel turns. I also like to cast just on the top ledge (try to any ways) of the channel. In winter even when it's cold, it seems like the Black Drums come up to near shallow looking for bait. Just like the RedFish do.

But what do I know, I haven't gotten wet in a very long time. Ughhh.

Today I used cut pin perch and cut sand trout. Worked good, stayed on and caught a quite a few sand trout. i was glad i got a bite from anything after a few hours of nada tossing lures. Action was fast every cast.

I took 10 for fillets, and ate 2 for dinner this evening.

I saw no drum anywhere that i went.

I prefer Dead Shrimp on 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook. Tear off the shrimp's head to let more of the scent out. Hook the shrimp from tail end to the head around the circle of the hook. Perch, crab, sting rays, and eels will eat most of anything put on the bottom in the winter.

For economy of scale and effectiveness, dead shrimp has always been a winner for me in bottom fishing. I prefer my Red and Black Drums around 24".

And older pic when I use to live near the water.

I recognize that drum he used to hang out around the causeway. Laughing

I use squid often sometimes it will pull in drum sometimes not.

Does stay on hook much better than shrimp with bait stealers around.

If you use it try it different ways. Sometimes just the head on a hook will work better than a whole squid. Sometimes a strip cut out of the body is best. Rarely have luck with just the body on the hook. Also sometimes it helps to put a fishbite on with the squid.

just a reminder that you can not keep a big ugly that is between 30-52 inches. anything bigger than 52 you have the state record and can keep it for that purpose. Gooduck out there.

Crab or cut mullet. The fresher the better, but I've caught BUs on year old frozen bait.
