New years day fishing following that Thursday cold front sucked for me. All the places that I had seen them pre-frontal were not holding fish on this day.
I should have guessed that the bright sun would drive them up out of the deeper channels to the grassy flats to feed on perch. I should have drifted the flats tossing a rattle float trailing a perch imitation. |

The low tides have really dropped a lot of water out north of the JFK. The fish may move up from the ICW and deeper holes on sunny days to feed in the very shallow grassy areas with warmer temps than the deeper channels. They are scattered out far and wide at times, and concentrated in schools at other times.
I will drift large grassy shallow areas and get out to wade promising spots. The tides in the crash channels have been ripping at times lately with the tide changes.
I would assume that south of jfk may have some good wading in the flats surrounding the natural gut area, all the way to the ICW. Murky water is better than clear water. |

I am thinking that the schools of reds that stayed home from the bull migration can tolerate some colder temps to a certain degree before they seek refuge.
I am also thinking that some big trout remained behind where the food is, and where deep refuge is available when needed. With winter tides and sunny days, the shallow areas are bound to warm up fast. The more inaccessible areas with less boat traffic should be the key. The trout should be looking for a good sized meal to hold him over on the days where they are forced into the deeper sanctuaries by cold weather conditions.
I still feel new to the area and still exploring, and learning as I go. |
